I've had my eyes on Abominable Electronics pedals for a while now, but have not pulled the trigger on one. I think the main reason is because there is something about the owner of that company that simply rubs me the wrong way. He seems to be constantly posting about how justified he is to be selling his pedals at their price and how it pisses him off that people only buy during sales. Or he warns people not to buy used because the warranty will be void. He also publicly shames potential customers by revealing their emails to him about the wait times for his pedals and his response always seems to be (paraphrase) "Well, if you don't like it, don't buy one of my pedals." He seems to do stuff like this quite often.

Anyhow, here is his newest rant, quoted directly from Facebook.....

"I never thought anyone would do it but someone appears to have bought a pedal on sale & has posted it at full price right after receiving it and saying the whole "don't wait 8 weeks" thing, i.e: someone is flipping the pedals. If you plan on ever doing this and we catch it, don't be surprised if your name is flagged and future orders are canceled. You have every right to sell a pedal you own, but we have every right to also try to prevent being taken advantage of"

TO me, this was the final straw in me deciding never to buy one of his pedals. Regardless of whether the person bought one to resell, what business is it of Abominable's? There are a million reasons why someone would flip a pedal they just bought. What if a medical emergency came up etc?? Why the public shaming and threats? Is this a good way to run a business?

Someone should tell this guy that yes, his painted enclosures may look cool and his circuits may sound great, but at the end of the day there are dozens of other boutique builders making the same thing (clones) and have much better people skills.

Anyway, there is a big thread on facebook of his fanboys all agreeing with him, but I was curious as to what the pedal buying public thought. My personal opinion is that a buyer has no obligation to the maker to keep their pedal forever and has no obligation not to try to make a little money on it if they can.

I think all a seller can do is have a warranty that only extends to the original owner. He/she has the right to do business (or not) with whom they wish, including whatever price they want, and you have the right to buy from who you wish (and sell to who you wish). There are plenty of pedals in the world...

Unless you explicitly agree to something differently in writing at the time of a straight up sale, once you own it it is yours to do with as you please within the boundaries of the law. If you choose to sell it for 100 times its original cost 1 minute after paying for it, that's your business. If you choose to give it to a charity for free or bury it in the back yard that's also your business.

My last commerce and contract law courses were about 40 years ago, but I can't imagine things have changed that much.

How would you feel if you had a company and someone did that with your product? The builder said something about it because he knows there is a public forum to speak from and he wanted people to know how he felt about it. What's wrong with that??

Do I agree or like everything Abominable does and says? Nah. But it's his company and his pedals, he can do or say what he wants. There are plenty other builders out there that do wonderful jobs with what they do and you can choose to buy or not buy from any builder you want. I know if I owned a company though and someone did that to me and I saw it, I would be very tempted to scream out that that is total BS. But I wouldn't let what one builder says and does ruin my day. Or sway my opinion really. If a pedal is awesome and I can afford it and it's not like super rare or something like that, I would buy/use it no matter the builder. There are very few if only one or two builders I've boycotted because of behavior or practices. But I was somewhat emotionally connected to those.

I liked your final sentence because I firmly believe that no one can ruin your day, you have to let them ruin it - a victim mindset is rarely helpful!

As for contrasting business models/behaviors I would simply point to Mesa who uses fixed pricing for commercial retail (no sales, no discounts ever) and offers a 5 year transferable warranty. Mesa could care less what I do with my gear after I buy it at full price and in fact helps me sell things on (with the transferable warranty) if that's my choice. They also treat their customers with the utmost respect.

As long as there are choices for who to buy stuff from, rude businesses will probably not see their full potential in their market segment - and that certainly does't come even close to being able to ruin my day. :)

I agree with you on them. I can't stand the brand and the owner seem obnoxious and extremely pretentious. His pedals sound ok, but there's a hundred other pedals that sound better IMO.

Re the reselling of pedals. That's a buyers right to do that. If I buy a pedal on sale, it's my RIGHT to resell it for whatever I want because it's my property. If you bitch about it or call me out on it, then you're a poor business man and probably should stop being so easily offended by stupid crap and be grateful you're even able to sell in this market.

Also he runs sales all the time which tells me either A) his stuff doesn't sell well or B) he spends the money from one sale then bank rolls the next batch that needs to be made with another sale.

I could be wrong, but to me if you run a ton of sales, you're devaluing your own product. I also HATE that people take full money for products that will not be ready for 6-8 weeks (if that because we all know that's BS and they'll be ready when they are ready, which could be any time they feel like it). It's bad business, just like being immature and calling out people reselling things. Why do you care??? You got your money, it's theirs! Now mind your butthurt business and go on with your life.

I agree that they do have the right to cancel future orders, but now that they've thrown this point of view out there, it becomes a moot point (for me at least) because there won't be any future orders to cancel. Looks like a very effective strategy to kill or at least reduce sales of their pedals.

I can understand his frustration, it's tough selling any service or product for a premium even if it's worth it. in service plumbing we get a lot of people who try to take advantage of us but maintaining a healthy amount of professionalism is key to future sales.
My story on how easy this is to do .
A co worker did a job and the customer called complaining of problems with the repair (if I recall he replaced their sink with a high quality stainless steel basin and a very very pricey faucet at there request) and he charged a prenegotiated price of 1350. the company guaranteed satisfaction or your money back, so I went out to see what was going on. the customer was experiencing buyers remorse and tried to complain their way to a refund and all I had to say was I apologize ma'am but this install is to standard and the product is in perfect working order. I understand the price is significant but for the quality of product and installation you wanted that is the cost . since you authorized the price and signed that you were satisfied with the install we can't make any additional repairs. our warranty of course stands and we'll be happy to help you with any issues during the warranty period and into the future.

It's that easy, no snark, no insults , no problems. just tell the customer you can't help and why. some companies are great about this in gear and apparently some are terrible. I don't understand the lack of professionalism shown here by abominable and probably won't do business with them if that's the level of service I can expect.
