I saw them live on Friday in Irvine...his tone was BEASTLY and gutsy, again, a lot like on Different Sages. Very powerful show.
No his tone is not better.
I saw them just a couple of weeks ago, and Geddy's tone was just as chainsaw-y as it has ever been, maybe worse. In fact, I think this was the worst Rush show I've seen in terms of sound quality. It felt like there was a huge gap from the ~35Hz bass drum to the ~150+Hz region of Geddy's bass. It was a screech-fest.
Couple that factor with the sheer number of drunk/high white-trash idiots at the show, and I had a hard time enjoying myself.
Don't get me wrong, I love Rush, but I think the bad sound, ticket price, and the morons at the show have put me off of Rush for a while. Unless they really start to dig deep into the old stuff (or put out an incredible album), I think this will be my last Rush show.

I just had the EXACT same experience last night at the Boston show
The bass was completely without low end and inaudible for the entire show. the only time we heard the bass was when he was playing with no guitar, and even then the tone was all sizzly high end.
I was sitting just behind the sound board slightly off to the right so that couldn't have been it. don't know if it weas a problem just at this show, but alas this is the worst sounding Rush show I've experienced in almost 20 years of seeing them

I just saw them in Pittsburgh last night and I had the same thoughts. Geddy's bass was lacking a bit in the low end. Sounded cool when it was just him or with Neil or if Alex was playing with a clean tone but as soon as Alex kicked in any distortion, it was buried a bit. Not totally inaudible but not as robust as previous tours. Other than that, great show!
