Done with Dunlop Super Brights

I had lots of problems with these strings, and they would NOT even intonate correctly! Posted on here before about the problems and no one seemed to believe me. Oh well, it's the truth about these strings having problems! I've moved on to DAddario NYXLs and Pro Steels and have never looked back!

Went through three sets and always had intonation problems with one of the strings, after that episode I gave them up that day.

The flexibility of the round core may be causing the breaking problems. It also means these are the wrong string to use for down tuning.
I thought they were OK but they didn't blow me away. I didn't care for Dunlop's regular strings either. I do like the Miller 5 string set though.

Dunlop Super Brights are more flexible than most due to the small hex core, which is more susceptible to breakage than a normal-sized round core.

Interesting - i have played the Super Bright Nickels for two years now, including boiling between gigs to bring the sizzle back and no breakage with plentiy of slap & pop style, including the high C on my 6er. Got some 6 string sets for $18 shipped... not bad. DR Marcus Millers are really nice as well.

Off topic, but I was about as lucky with DRs before I switched. Obviously not everyone's experience, but I was getting a dead string every other pack!

Hate that for you man. I've gone through about 300 SuperBrights so far (individual strings, not sets) on my Roscoes, Laklands, and Spectors. Never broken a single string and I think I've had a total of two dead strings. I had more dead strings than that on my last set of DR's! Quality wise, SuperBrights have been as good as anything else.

Man that sucks. I have been on the super bright nickel train for almost 2 years now, and have never had a bad string, out of dozens of sets, both 6 string and 4 string sets. I have a couple more sets in the mail. I hope they didn't change anything.

I was done with them about ten minutes after putting them on two basses. The are floppy and sound horrible to me. I cut them off with wire cutters moments after they went on. They have lots of fans. But I clearly don't get the hype.

OK not "moments" but they weren't around long.

I've got a few sets of them and they all died within a week. They are really bright during first few days but after they break in they become lifeless IMO. Went back to my trusty DR Lo Riers.

Commensurate with the OP. I haven't had a string break on me in 20 yrs but I wouldn't want to drop $15-$20 to have to use an old string to get me through until I got my next set of strings.

Oddly enough, DR are the only bass strings I've seen or used that break.

I have been using the super brights without issue, for a while, and they seem like a pretty average round to me. I have had a bad string here and there from many brands.

No problem with breakage for me either.
They do mellow out so if you want the brightness to continue, these are not for you.
I found them similar to DR Sunbeams.

Very true. I don't really like them until they've been played in a couple of weeks.

I switched form DR Sunbeams to Dunlop SBs on my 5ers, and never had a problem either. The Sunbeams
on the other hand had a few dead B-strings that I could not bring to life even with all the setup suggestions
given here.
Vastly different experiences here...interesting....

Bummer man, might I suggest D' Addario's nickle strings, been using their Regular Light Gauge for years and never had this or really any other issue with them.

A friend of mine used the SB and said the same thing. I used the Marcus Miller and I went back to the Hi Beams.

The Marcus Miller DSBs are a very different string to the regular DSBs. Much more aggressive tone. A lot of love on this forum for the regular DSBs which I tried, liked the tone and thought longevity would be what I would hope for but preferred the MM DSBs. All this to say, you may want to try the regular DSBs which will have a similar tone to Hi-Beams but won't be as bright.

Well Dunlop sent me some strings to replace the broken string. I appreciate that. Put a set on my Pentabuzz and I'm pleased with the Super Brights on that bass.

I'd be looking for burrs on the capstan or the bridge of that bass you put them on in the OP.
