Don't "clench your buttocks" around cops...

I am of the belief that things are neither better or worse.

I can agree up to a point (as I do not think it is worse and not necessarily better - but I definitely don't think it is worse), but I do have a simple question to ponder:

If a few dozen people stood around and took a picture of themselves burning a live human being without trial in a pyre in a public square in the USA in 2013, what do you think would happen?

Do you think it would actually happen in real-time? What do you think would be the reaction?

If several authority figures violate a man what should the reaction be? Would it happen in real time?

The reaction would be as it will be, they will be suspended and a lengthy investigation with tons of press release will happen.

Now, you can answer my question.

As a sidenote - I think it is absurd and borderline disturbing to level equally the equivalent of a colonoscopy with someone being burned alive.

5000 people over an 80 year period - 1/3 of the life of the republic. That's an estimate of 60 people a year murdered often by mobs of people who were not given a trial (either the murdered or the murderers). That would mean that once in a week in 2013 you would have to hear about 1.2 people being murdered in the public without a trial and condoned by public authorities. It does not take into account abuses of slaves when they were owned by people. I repeat, when they were owned by people. Meaning they were owned by people.

People were owned by people.

Millions of people were owned by people.

For 300 years.

Owned.

They were property.

So cops raping people is no biggie because slavery. Got it. See if you can work something in about the Nazis too, that'll really drive that point home.

Clearly, I have repeatedly addressed your (and others in this thread and many, many others in this culture) nonsensical belief that we are on a descent in regards to 'liberty' and 'social justice'. I like to put things in context. Putting this event in context, it is a micro-blip on the USA map this month, let alone this year, decade, or century.

The discussion has run its course in regards to what I was evaluating. Unfortunate for the man, but absolutely a local issue being carried by a certain segment of the population to prove logically fallacious talking points.

Heres the synopsis and im sticking to it; Im just a guest user or whatever who'd sit in here in my freetime and read threads that appeal to me, a "lurker" if you will. I typically use keywords mostly because i enjoy many of the older threads especially 200-2006. I the posters i enjoy the most are typically guys/gals who are long extinct from here..Morf for example. I enjoy all of his stuff. Ive spent countless hours reading through "locked" threads because they're always entertaining or controversial. Beneficial information is cool, but i can get that from all the older musicians i encounter in my everyday life therefore i only read or post in threads i find "entertaining". Out of current threads i tend to enjoy most stuff from Jacquo, Dr.cheese, and Bluewine (ive never met or spoken to him but he lives in my hometown and i enjoy his style of posting). I couldnt care less about my blank profile or whos been banned, or what peeps think of my bass, amp, or resume'. Not trying to come off as "rude" but it is what it is. Im not interested in any "good ole boys" scenarios, i AM however interested in police profiling and civil rights so i posted here. Is this a sin or something? If i said anything that warrented me being sized up by the fantasy mods who came straight at me while not only ignoring the op but contributed nothing to the discussion whatever will be will be i suppose. If im ever banned, no sweat. I learned 3-4 years ago that i need not a supporting membership nor be a registered user to broswe threads because again..i get the MOST knowledge from the older threads and i get my entertainment from the locked ones. End of discussion.:)

Well I sure feel better now.

This gets me every time someone finds a news article about somebody doing somebody wrong. It's as if it's the worst thing that ever happened and that it happens thousands of times a day. I'm sure there were a thousand events that day worse than the one that has everyone here so irate. My point isn't to diminish the unacceptability of the cops' behavior but to point out that we could have a thousand threads a day about someone's rotten behavior.

It raises the question of whether more of this kind of thing is going on now compared to, say, 50 years ago. I think there isn't that much more of it going on, but we now have instantaneous worldwide communication and many more "journalists" with a name to make in many different media. The internet just foments indignation over this kind of thing. I mean, really - can't we just agree that it sucked to be that guy that day, and cops shouldn't do that kind of thing to people? What's left to be said or done?

Addressed in what way? Stated your opinion?
That you have.
Offered a compelling argument that proves that the scenario in the OP and ones like it are rare, one-off situations that are not increasing in frequency...?
You haven't done it. All you keep saying is that things were worse years ago and throw statistics at something that we all already know. Maybe I'm missing your point... please let me know if I am. I have no problem hearing you out. Maybe we're talking apples and oranges which is why I'm not getting what you're saying.

Let me put it this way - When I ask folks on one side of the spectrum to prove their point, they'll typically throw a pile of links my way, all containing stories about police brutality and such. They offer this as proof. Not so solid, but it is compelling I admit.

So if you are on the opposite side and feel that that sort of thought process is ludicrous, then offer up something (from the present) that shows it is a false pretense..?
It's a hard one to prove either way, I understand it, but if we're taking it on faith alone, then what makes you so down on the folks who do believe it?
IE, you KNOW they're wrong and look down on that notion, but what are you basing it on to be so absolutely sure of yourself? (please dont bring up the past again, that's not what I'm asking)

It raises the question of whether more of this kind of thing is going on now compared to, say, 50 years ago.

No it doesnt. Its been clearly illustrated to us that things are better now than they ever have been, so we can just go ahead and ignore these injustices, because, you know, we used to enslave people, and now we dont (he said jokingly).

Now THERE'S a post that makes sense to me. Leave it to Munji

It's a discussion forum. There's really nothing to be said or done about anything we talk about. Your argument illegitimizes this entire sub-forum, less maybe the relationship advice threads.

You do understand that dismissing a man getting repeatedly raped as "an unfortunate micro-blip" because slavery is pretty damn offensive, right? You further understand that the only one talking about society's descent regarding liberty and social justice is you, right?

For a guy who repeats the words "strawman" so much, you seem blissfully unaware that it's exactly what you're doing.

I'll take "cover your ass" for $1000, Alec. :smug: ;)
