If you have a burning desire to get a pedal that will always be useful, a tuner is the answer. While not really an "effect", it makes life easier and most of them also double as a mute switch.

Don't like effects pedals

As was stated earlier by others, get yourself a tuner.
When my brother was first (seriously) getting into bass, he was asking me about all different types of pedals. I told him to get a tuner. Having played at a Car Show, where we were actually playing on the sidewalk, there was on more than one occasion, a car revving its engine as I was tuning up and getting ready to play.
Under those circumstances, a tuner is A BULLETPROOF VEST FOR YOUR EGO.

Sounds like you are being offered the red pill and the blue pill. Which one will it be? The blue pill, and all will be well and you will forget we ever had this conversation and your life will go back to as it was and never knowing the difference. The red pill? Well, prepare yourself for a trip down the rabbit hole and your life will never be the same. Which will it be, Neo?
At age 67, it's a lot easier trying and moving pedals than tube amps. You start to worry when it's hard to keep a bass guitar neck elevated. That will be the point where you break down and play a double bass. Weightless! No amps! No pedals!
Do you mean you don’t like any you’ve TRIED? Or just generally you don’t like the way that effects sound on Bass?
I will say that along my entire journey playing Bass, I’ve delved in and out of different obsessions, whether it was tube amps or basses. My pedal exploration/obsession has been the most fun, inspiring, and least expensive! Finding different ambient textures, different pedal orders, etc. is an integral part of my writing and playing now, but that’s mainly due to my influences (many that don’t even play Bass).
I’d say if there’s an effected bass sound you “like” try and emulate that and see where it goes! It’s supposed to be fun

I’m 67 as well. I’ve had exactly 5 pedals in my life. My Eden WTDI, a Boss Tuner, a Boss Compression, an untamed octave pedal, and a Sonic Stomp. The only two that remain, the tuner, and the WTDI. The others were a total waste of time and money.
I'm 62, and I've bought more than enough for the both of us. You don't have to worry about starving some effects pedal maker's kids - I'm supporting them for you. You're welcome.

It depends on what music moves you! Do you like Nugent's Stranglehold or the O'Jays For The Love Of Money? grab a Phase 90 and see how you like it. Do you like old Sabbath? Try some fuzz and wah. et cetera.
If you just haven't tried any that you liked, then that's OK too, just keep your mind open and fart around with whatever pedals you come across to see if they give you something you didn't have before that you like.
I was very against using pedals for a long time. Eventually i got into it while downsizing gear. I used to gig with big racks that had rack tuners, wireless systems and rack compressors. Along with preamp/ power amp or a bass head. I got tired of carrying the rack gear around. Gear came along like the shure glxd which replaces both the rack tuner and rack wireless. Even now I use a small board and a Mesa d-800 with the band. My board is just a wireless/tuner, octave, overdrive, and delay

Then don't use them. Tone and technique are the meat and potatoes. Effects are seasoning: Terrific if you get it right, way too hot or bad tasting if you get it wrong.
Sometimes, like a great steak or smoked brisket, salt and pepper is the way to go. Simplicity can be elegant. I learned to use hickory or post oak for smoke, or the occasional fruitwood. No mesquite? No. It can run away with itself fast, and your brisket tastes like it was smoked in a Cummins diesel. Effects can be that way . . . . but the right ones at the right time can be brilliant if you hear things that way. if you don't, that's just as relevant to be big, clean, and on time.
And at 67 (btw, I'm 65), remember these words:
"Old Age . . . . and Treachery".

Hey Peter - I'm 63, and here are my 3 pedals - 2 Zooms, one new, and a new Boss SY-1 synth. I really enjoy the Zooms for my practice, noodling needs - lots of cool, editable programs, drum machine and a looper with each. The B3 is a bit older - 9 years, but the B1-Four and Boss are brand new. I don't really care for a slew of chained effects at my age, so the multi's fit my needs. The Boss is a monster of a pedal, so many sounds, powerful, and sounds great through my Ampeg. I say go for it, you just might like it!!!
