Don't play "Here Comes the Bride"

Had a wedding gig this weekend. We're going over some details with the event coordinator:

"OK, so we'll play some background music while people are getting to their seats, then Here Comes the Bride while the couple enters..."

"No, don't play that."

"Why not?"

"There's no bride. It's two men."

...

...

...

"OK, uh, something else then ..."


I have no problem with two men getting married, it was just a bit of a surprise :) It was a good gig; everything went smoothly, they liked the music and gave us a nice tip.

There is a bit of ignorance going on here. The piece of music is often called "Here Comes The Bride" but that is not its actual name. It is a march from an opera by Wagner, called "Lohengrin." It also not an instrumental piece - it has words - and none of them are "here comes the bride." You can read more about it here.

While correct, the Lohengrin Processional is known as Here Comes the Bride so far and wide that the "lyrics" come automatically to most people, thus making it inappropriate anyway.

Or maybe in certain countries the popularity of this version eclipses the original. Since everyone is not a music historian, they are content to hear the melody and start singing "here comes the bride" in their head. Ignorance is bliss I guess.

I was an usher at a wedding several years ago and the groom was very anti-gay. The wedding was at a hotel in Boston. As we were getting ready, we noticed a large crowd of people walking and carrying signs. As they passed the hotel we realized that it was a gay pride parade. The look on the groom's face was priceless.
