I never once saw Jimmy Buffett doing a gig in shorts until his career was well-established. Maybe he did, I don't know...but I was well aware of Jimmy before Margaritaville, and I never saw it. When you're established, you can do anything you want. But when you are playing the Bucket O'Blood and you want to move on from it, then I suggest not wearing shorts.

Why are some people so concerned with what other people are doing? I NEVER wear shorts on stage, but don't have words to express how little I care what other people do. Spend more time worrying about your own deficiencies and less time worrying about the other guy.

I don't care what the average person is doing, but when I go see an act I don't want to see a bunch of casually dressed slobs.. I feel you owe it to your audience to not only play your best, but to also look your best.. Not like some street thug with poor judgement..

I agree, dress the part, if the part calls for shorts do it, if the part calls for a 3 piece suit, do it... Dress appropriately.

Jimmy Buffett is wearing a costume to promote a "life style" that is actually about selling a brand, and products. For example this margaritaville brand BBQ ranch salad dressing pictured below. He used to be cool (also see picture below), but somewhere along the way, the "beach" thing started making some money, so he went with it and started wearing shorts.

The guys in AC/DC all wear pants with the exception of Angus, who again, is wearing a costume. He's not wearing shorts because it's humid. It started out as a gimmick and is now part of the AC/DC brand.

As for Robert Trujillo, a 50 year old man wearing baggy shorts and white athletic socks... I got nothing. I think he looks silly. To me those are clothes you wear at the house on Saturday.

You are right about the "dress appropriately" part... but my question is when are shorts appropriate. For me, the answer is at the beach, participating in sporting events, and in the home. Not on a stage, during a performance, in a professional working environment, in front of a crowd (who probably paid to see you).

Please remember that this is all in fun and IMO, and IME. No offense intended! Wear the clothes you like, play the gear you like.

If you don't care, you are happy with where you are at, and you are all about comfort, then wear what you want... but for me personally, I don't want to see a performer who doesn't care. I get it that you can care about the music and still wear shorts,,, but in spite of how we would all like for it to be, it's not really all about the music.

Ive only done one show in shorts and that was because I had been running sound all day for other bands and didnt have time to change into my tight jeans before my band's turn on stage.

I hate to see sandals on anyone trying to represent themselves as a rocker.
I wont take them seriously.

Birkenstocks and flip flops are for hippies.
Dont bother arguing with me on it.

I dont really even like tennis shoes on stage.

BTW, I love AC/DC, and yes, Angus always wears shorts. But there are two things that need to be considered:

1. Angus is the only one in the band who has ever worn shorts, and it's part of a very stylish schoolboy outfit with a jacket and tie that has become his trademark look.

2. You ain't Angus.

I remember what a older wiser player once told me when I was coming up.
Always dress at least on step above the audience. He remarked how it is important to know who the performers are in a crowd. That always stuck with me.

I hate it when you cant tell the band from the crowd.

I play weddings in Saratoga Springs during the track season and I wear a suit, Bow Tie and Bowler. Look Damn Good in it too. It fits the situation. When the Bride and Groom give the green light for shorts at a wedding that's what I'll be wearing. Hasn't happened yet and likely never will.

Haven't worn shorts at a gig since the late 70s. I was way more fit then.

My dog is currently the only one that thinks I look good in shorts. And that's only because it means we're going in the water.

To each his or her own regarding shorts. Hope all your gigs are paid no matter what the attire.
