Well, like with most things, rules don't always apply if you're a hottie!
I don't own shorts, therefore I never wear them. Granted it only get 100 for maybe one week out of the year in central Illinois, but still.
You need some cowboy boots to balance those out...

I've never worn shorts on-stage (not that it matters to me if anyone else does). I like to wear 1970s Levis denim bellbottoms on-stage. Sue me.
Off-stage (in my "normal" routine), I wear shorts sometimes. Depends on how hot it is. Of course, I've never worn the bloomers that people call shorts these days (it's not 1890 and I'm not going to pretend like it is). But then, I don't wear shorts so short that they show the bottom of my backside like the picture of the guy above, either.

That's not a bad thing, that's awesome.
Personally I wear shorts about 360 days of the year. But to me they don't look right onstage unless you are playing an outdoor festival with hippies or at least reggae fans.
A buddy of mine is doing a surf-band gig tomorrow night in Encinitas - I can see shorts in a surf band.... but otherwise... nah.

Agreed, the amount of bare leg showing should be inversely proportional to the circumference of the thigh.
