Ha, I'm wearing shorts in my avatar photo. I get wanting to look the part, but frankly I'm too old to care about that sort of thing. I make sure what I wear to a gig is clean, in good condition, and any buttons are in the correct button holes. Other than that, either look at the lead singer instead or watch your shoes, dude.

I say wear whatever you want on stage, and in life. I think we really need to stop judging people based on their appearance. Bands especially! A band exists to create music, so the music should be the most important thing. If a band does an amazing performance, I wouldn't care less if they were all 400lb bearded ladies in their birthday suits. That's their prerogative. All these social conventions dictating what is and what isn't appropriate attire are entirely man made. They are merely a product the time we live in, not based on logic or merit, but merely on blind social conformity. These arbitrary rules hold our society back, and I believe that if people became more open minded and stopped caring about meaningless things like the way a person looks or dresses the world would be a better place.
I'm gonna say that's a totally different scenario my friend lol. I'd wager that her wearing shorts is increasing the likelihood of people going to future concerts. Black Francis in shorts would probably not have the same effect now

I think this might actually be the funniest thread I have read this year. LMFAO
First gig a couple weeks ago. I showed up in jeans/untucked button shirt w/black Docs. BL showed up in cargo shorts/Tshirt and flip flops that stayed on for 1 song. Drummer was in jeans and Tshirt. I didn't think at any point his shorts were inappropriate. In fact, he looked pretty dang comfortable throughout the gig.

I agree, but then I'm a musician not a leg model. For that matter, I have an ugly face and I don't wear a mask, and if the audience doesn't like that I feel about the same as I do about them not liking my legs.
The Elbo Room Ft. Lauderdale Beach mid summer, no AC, I'm wearing shorts, and if I was still in my 30's my shirt would be OFF.
It really depends on the gig....but, I played a Jazz festival on the beach 3 years in a row and our "uniforms" were nice shorts, silk camp shirts, and nice boat shoes. I also wear shorts on a lot of summer outdoor gigs when it's festival style gigs. The OP's opinion is just that....an opinion. I guess I would never be allowed in his bands......my bucket list will not be complete now....sigh
