Double Bass double bass mic/pickup in 2021

I was asking a great NY bassist if he used a mic even in smaller places, such as Smalls.. he said he did blend it in using a Felix. I have been experimenting with it makes a considerable difference. Just blending in 10% mic it really changed the tone, more attack and highs. Once was a very difficult room for sound, was with a louder drummer and the place was packed with a lot of noise. I never thought using a mic in the amp was doable but recent experiments have been successful. Not that I want to mess with it all the time, but nice to know it’s possible. I’ve been using dpa4099 with Felix

The DPA is one of the best microphones because of it's off axis rejection, and it's easy to keep mounted on the bass. I've certainly done that with the Remic Green, but every room I perform in is
different. A pickup will never get the detail that a microphone does, but recent developments in preamps have really improved the sound that's possible with a pickup, so in my case, unless it's
a concert I leave the microphone at home or send it FOH. Just my take for sure. I owned the DPA for several years and I still have my Grace Felix. It's a stellar combination.

Yeah, I've never gone the Clarus route. I wasn't a fan of the downfiring combos.

Me either. But the head pairs well with the GK MBX-112. Another bassist down here, Sam Edwards, uses it with some Phil Jones 2 -10 cabinet, sounds great too....

I bought a AI ten2 about 10 years ago but never liked the speakers. I love the amp though. I've been playing into one or two crazy 8s and it's been great.

Same here.
Had several downfiring AI cabs along the years, but only kept the head, which is great.
