+2, just make sure your rig is set up to encourage nice low end. I once did a gig without my 15" and the low end was nice, but not nearly as deep with the 15" speaker.

Which one?I have owned a SG Reissue, a RD Artist, a G3 and a Ripper and would never consider one of them to be a bass to replicate a stand up bass. Even with flats.

I agree with the Rob Allen posters. A fretless Rob Allen with tapewounds is as close to a standup as I have heard from an electric bass.
You can get 1/2 decent tones out of any bass if you get rid of any high end and really boost the low end. Deep thump is 1/2 the battle, but what puts a bass like the Rob Allen or Godin (with Rob's strings) is the finger noise from the piezo.
The Godin's have a very similar tone, but I'm not a fan of the slight neck dive. The 5 string kinda has narrow spacing and the B isn't the best.

I've never played a Deep.
As for amplification, anything capable of deep low end is fine. I use a bi-amped Ampeg SVT4Pro to a 4x10 and 15".
Then you've never spent any significant time playing DB. It's like trying to get a steel string acoustic guitar to sound like a classical guitar.
I am in the market for a bass (and amp) that I can use in a jazz band I'm trying to start.
(If the project doesn't go through I wan't a bass for jazz either way.)
The Rob Allens seem like a good choice, I am (was) also considering a Fender American Standard Jazz Bass fretless.
Getting them both is out of my budget.
For amplification I'm considering just a simple 1x15" cab.
For some reason I dislike the idea of different size speakers in one rig.
Something from Ashdown probably.
If the mix is done right, it works just fine. I've been to shows where my MB2 sounded better than an upright that was coming through the PA. It's not a replacement, but a convenient alternative.
If you want a cheaper alternative to the Rob Allen try the Spectorcore. Fishman bridge pickup. I don't think any electric comes close to a DB sound. They just don't have the big hollow body or string length but EBs with bridge pickups and semi-hollow bodies give you the closest sound you get from EB. And yes, tapewound strings.

I admit that the DB is ideal for the job, but I don't wan't to go through the hassle of buying it and learning it. It is a bit to risky for me right now, ... perhaps in the future.
Alternatives aren't a bad thing, except for short sighted purists...
Even if you use for example a BC Rich with COSM or POD technology to sound like an upright, that's a cool alternative.
Personally after 9 years of playing bass guitar I still like it that an instrument hangs on my body. Instead of standing beside a huge instrument. (This is also a reason why I gave up my aspirations for playing keyboard a few years ago.

Exactly. Part of my problem is that I've been playing 5-6 string basses too long and it doesn't help that I can fit 2 electric basses in less space. I haven't ruled out an EUB 6 string like the NS, but many tell me that I probably wouldn't get much benefit over the Rob Allen bass.
Anyway, back to the amps, sure, a 15" will do, but what about high end? Part of the benefit of a nice bi-amped rig is that you can capture some nice full low end and still have plenty of high end for other basses. I consider myself really lucky that I was able to throw my Ampeg rig together, barely touch the knobs, and get the tone I really wanted without any effort.
