Then I guess Ford's idea was either unprotected or has passed onto to public domain (if that applies to processes).

I believe the length of most US patents is 20 years. Not sure when the MM patent was initially filed. After 20 years I believe the item/design becomes public domain.

It's a trademark, not a patent. Patents run out in 7 years, not 20.

Has anyone else noticed that the fretboard changed from maple this morning....to rosewood tonight?
or is that just my crazies getting the best of me....

Patent law says you get 17 years to make your "protected" profits. The logic being that after 17 years you are on the verge of possibly becoming a monopoly. After 17 years, your inovation becomes public. There is a whole bunch of grey legal tape that can help companies prolong this though. I am not sure about the trade mark deal. But when I consider that the Stingray is around 20 years old, I am thinking what's the big hairy deal. This is the way business is done.

I think it was a miss print, they said Maple but the photo showed Rosewood!
