Well, apologies to the OP for the slight hijack, but I don't have as many basses as some of the guys around here, to be sure! Since becoming a responsible adult....wait, scratch that....since I first became gainfully employed (long, long ago), I've always kept between five and ten instruments around for fun. I think I'm still right at about that same number. I buy, sell, trade, that sort of thing, and I'm far, far, far from rich, believe me!
In fact, I'm retired military, so you know I don't have any damned money!
I don't think of it as a collection - it's more like a group that I play or use as trade fodder if it doesn't work out.
The Fbass is a long-term loan from a good friend. The Jazz was a Valentines Day gift from my wife a few years back, otherwise it would be long gone. (I do like it, just not very much.)

Yep, you're right, it's standard VVT config. I spent some more time with mine and the tone knob is fascinating - it changes the instrument dramatically, but in a good way. It really does sound to me like it's adding mids with each turn.
BUMP. As previously reported, changing the strings on this beast brings it to life. My Burners arrived today and after a quick installation I hooked 'er up to the rig. WHOA. She became a snarling beast - well defined highs and balls approaching a real 'Ray. I'm getting closer - total investment thus far is $89 for the bass + $57 for pickup & strings altho (as stated above) the pickup did NOT need to be replaced as it appears to be a GFS Alnico already.
Last step is setting up new pots & wiring to go with the 'Ray clone preamp which should be arriving any day now. This could take a while to accomplish due to a lack of time for soldering.

Cheap copy bass or whatever, a great player could make this bass sing. Adversly, a poor bassist can make a Smith, Warrior, EBMM, etc..sound like crap. I like the idea of getting this bass to mod. I think it looks great. Good Luck!
