I have a Fender Reggie Hamilton Jazz on order. It comes with a Hipshot extender key on the "E" string. I'll tune the bass CGDA and will probably set up the Hipshot to give me C or A. That way I can pick up the low B that CGDA doesn't give me (in case I ever need it) plus a couple more notes but tuning the low string to A instead of B mainly gives me another string that I already know well.

If that proves useful I will probably put a Hipshot on my other bass too.

Nothing too dramatic but I've gone to DGCF and using a capo on E for a couple of songs. Did it because we are transposing songs to suit the singer's range. It is working great for me and I don't think i'll change anytime soon.

The benefits of floppier strings and everything being closer to me is great. Now I just have to remember which songs I need the capos on.

To arsie - my band plays in DGCF and while my guitarist often uses a capo I simply transpose everything, and it seems to work fine.

To 4StringLoser - DGCF may not be dramatic, but it's freaking awesome!

Might as well add me to the club too. All of the Crystavox stuff is downtuned a full step and I play it all of the time. Plus one of the bands I sued to play in always down tuned as well.

Just discovered this thread.

Been told numerous times I'm "not really playing the bass" and that I "need to learn how to play the bass for real" due to my drop tuning (C-G-D-A) ... usually by the same people that bobbed their heads and tapped their feet to my notes/rthyms...*sigh*... sure, okay. whatever. ;)

May I have a number?

That's a curious attitude. I mean I suppose that if you were to tune up in the same octave as a guitar someone might legitimately make this sort of comment, but not for tuning down. Sometimes I wonder if anyone tunes EADG anymore when I read TB. :D Certainly alternate tunings are very popular here. You could point out to them that some double bassists play in that tuning or you could just say "Of course I play a real bass, I play the electric bass cello!"
