Downsizing rack - can I lose my power strip?

Hey,
Currently my rig uses a 4U rack case which houses my (3U) Ampeg SVT 5 Pro and a 1U rackmount power strip.

I only really have the power strip because I had the rack space to fill, and someone talked me into “needing” the surge protection from it.

However, the Ampeg is a beast piece of equipment and has its own protection circuit, plus it has a courtesy outlet that I can use to power my wireless unit when I feel like using it, which is just about the only use I have for the power strip at the moment.

I need a new rack case since I bought mine used and the latches are getting flimsy, and I wouldn’t mind cutting back on the size and weight, so getting a 3U just for the amp is appealing to me as long as it’s safe to lose the power strip. Usually I use a pedal tuner, so I don’t think I need to save space for a rack tuner or any other rack equipment.

What do you think? Do I really need that power strip? Does it offer me any more protection than my amp already has?

Agreed with BassChuck. But if your 4u rack is a beast or it doesn't load well in your vehicle, then dithcing it for a lighter/newer 3u rack should be fine.

I haven't owned the 5, but I've seen a couple in the wild in 3 and 4 ru Gator style cases, as well as in shockmount racks. It's a pretty heavy amp, no (40ish lbs)? Not sure how well the really light rotomolded cases will stand up to the job, unless you always handle it yourself.

Yeah, but always throw a couple of these in the car, just in case.

yep. unless you got a very expensive and very heavy voltage regulator, the rack thing is a glorified power strip, feel free to ditch it.
I was so bummed years ago when I opened up my “fancy” Furman Rack Rider to discover its really nothing more than a glorified power strip like you said. Felt pretty dumb. But I do still use it. Something, something, pride, etc.
