DR Pure Blues Bass Strings...

I bought a set for my lakland JO 5 and hate, hate, hated them. They felt like they had even lower tension than sunbeams or hibeams and had zero bite.

Rosa did not send me an extra set. Apparently, you have more pull than I do.
I put the strings on, but I have not adjusted the set up yet. They do seem to be smoother than the ones I took off. I will finish the set up and try them out after dinner tonight. I can't wait.

These are nice strings. The high end is tight and clear and the low end is smooth. I thought that there was going to be more thump to the lows, and I was looking forward to it, but I think that I like this smoothness better.

I have been using Ken Smith Bass Burner strings for several years. However, the DR Pure Blues strings have captured my interest. I will probably install a set on one of basses this month.

Still loving these strings. They sound great, feel good and have held of over several gigs and many practices. They are going on to more of my basses.

Yeah, using a B string, that's why I stick with hex core.

I put them on last night. They feel and sound like a nickel string to me. I've never tried Sunbeams so I can't compare them against them but to me they seem to be quite a bit like EB Slinkies but with more richness and depth. I'll be gigging with them tomorrow night so I'll get a better feel of how they sit in a mix. Unless they really shine during the gig I don't think they'll be replacing Fat Beams for me. I still am a die hard stainless steel guy I guess.

I just tried these on my Nordstrand jazz and I am liking them. I usually use Nickel Lowriders on that bass and I notice that these seem to have more definition and less overtones than the Lowriders. They still feel nice and smooth but definately have a different character than other nickel strings I have tried. I didnt notice lower tension, actually I thought I felt more tension than with the Lowriders. I will have to see how they last, although I have always felt that DR excels in this area with all their strings.

I've got them on my Ripper and J-Bass. They're my new favorite roundwound set. Very musical sounding. Love 'em!

My current preferred string sets are:

General use: DR Pure Blues
Fretless: GHS Pressure Wound
Flats: GHS Precision Flats/Roto 77s
Acoustic: Tomastik Acoustic Bass (also called Acousticore)

Now if D'Addario would just bring back the original "Reds" that were copper wound and not just copper-coated...

I finally played them amplified last night. My Carvin completely came to life! All the tone I've wanted for so long is in the Pure Blues. I have found my string.

It took me a day or two to adjust to the tone quality but after a couple weeks I'm really digging these.
I'm rolling through several sets but these aren't going anywhere. It has been years since I've had DR's on a bass.
I say job well done. nice full bottom end on these!

I still like the BBs.. but these have a nice feel too them.. not too tight not too loose.. and a very good mix of highs and lows.. Not too hot.. I have to see how long they last..

Hi Green1! I'm interested in both the DR Pure Blues and DR's Nickel Lo-Riders for my Ristola-6. I very much prefer a string with a higher tension feel, and I like Nickel roundwounds over stainless steel.

I see from your post, the Pure Blues set seemed to you to have more tension than the Nickel Lo-Riders. Which of these 2 sets sounded more balanced to you? If either set has a mids-scoop, please let me know.

I watched the Bass Wizard's YouTube video comparing Pure Blues, High Beams, and Sunbeams. Oddly, I preferred the sound of the Sunbeams followed by the Pure Blues, although the Pure Blues still sounded really good. I wish he would've included Nickel Lo-Riders in the comparison.

When I went to a local guitar center having the intentions of buying DR Sunbeams, I ended up walking out with pure blues that I was recommended from the store manager.

As soon as I got home and set up the strings on my 5 string Fretless I was already in love with the winding and the texture of the string.

Once everything was all set up and ready to go, the strings it produced on a Fretless gave out the most growl/mwah that I instantly fell in love with. Already giving me good compliments from my professor in college Although a bit on the warm side of the growl/mwah these strings will probably be "the strings" to come back to.

Even though I want to explore with the DR Sunbeams and also revisit the GHS Pressurewounds, the pure blues does almost what the GHS Pressurewounds does as far as tone. Again I need to revisit the GHS Pressurewounds, it's been two years the last time I played them on a Fretless Squier

I guess I'm in the minority opinion here. I got a set of Pure Blues to replace my dead Nickel Lo-Riders on my MIM active Fender Jazz and they are not winning me over.

They don't sound bad to me, just kinda meh. I see a lot of people raving about how balanced they are, but I can't say that they have anything going on tone-wise that the Nickel Lo-Riders don't already. I was hoping for something that was like the Nickel Lo-Riders but more flexible and with more highs. I don't think the Pure Blues delivered on that. At standard tuning, they seem stiff and lack sparkle. Tuning down a whole step actually makes them feel and sound much better (more like Sunbeams) which I've never encountered in a set of strings before. Kinda weird. They do have a nice texture and very pronounced bass fundamentals, but a big booming sound with weak highs doesn't really suit my playing style. I guess I'm really motivated to practice a lot now, because the sooner I wear these out, the sooner I can ditch them for Sunbeams (which I clearly keep using as the comparison!)

They didn't impress me as well. They went dead (I mean TRULY dead) after 2 gigs and that never happens to me with any string I've used. I'm now using EB Cobalts. I have found my ultimate string.
