DR Strings Club?

Any love for DR Legends in here? I had just purchased a set of TI's in hopes of throwing them on my Bob Glaub, but it turns out the almighty Plek machine actually cut the nut slots too wide/low on the E and A strings. This would cause the light TI's to wobble all silly in their place, creating horrible unsympathetic rattle and thus robbing my tone. One of my local stores had a set of DR Legends in stock and I decided to try them out. I have to admit, a big part of my curiosity about them stemmed from the fact that they are almost never discussed here so I was kind of excited to get them on. At first I was a little miffed. I played a couple hours straight with them on my Lakland and wasn't too impressed. The tone was mud, lifeless. The tension was a bit tight and the strings had an overall rough texture. I decided to play another hour or so on them, after which I tweaked my truss, reset my intonation and saddle height and gave my bass a good cleaning. After ruminating on the fact that I just bought a set of strings I don't like all day, I got home with the intention of giving them another shot and if I didn't like 'em I'd be going back to Sunbeams on this particular bass (nothing against 'em, but I had decided a while ago that I was done with rounds).

Well, what do you know? When I got plugged in and started playing, the strings suddenly had life! They had flexibility and sounded great. I couldn't believe what just a few hours of breaking in had done. I am now really psyched for rehearsal this week so I can put it through my rig. So far, so good.

Cool story and very informative post. It is sort of the opposite of my experience with SS LoRiders or SS HighBeams where they are too zingy at first then settle in nicely. The LoRiders and HighBeams keep that nice settled-in tone for a long time. I hope the Legends will do the same for you. Let us know in a couple of months.

Cheers,
Dang

Ah, heck, why not!?

Jonas Hellborgs on my Precision four-string,

Nickel Lowriders on my Jazz V.

Set of SS lowriders (thought I ordered the nickels, but doesn’t matter, I want to try them anyway) still in the box, not sure which bass I’ll put them on.

I’m sure I’ll stick with the DRs, so I’ll take a numbah.

:)

Well, I've gone through 2 rehearsals with the Fat Beams on my custom Moser Arachnid Ultra, and they sound great and I really love the way they feel! So it looks like they're keepers, and I'm joining the club, hehehehe... :D

The "acid test" will be how they perform on our South American mini-tour which starts next week.

Cheers!

Well, I'm definitely in. The Fat Beams passed the test with flying colours! 3 super-sweaty gigs in 4 nights, with no boiling or cleaning procedure in between, and they still sound and feel brand new! :D

Cheers!

I've been using SS Low Riders for about 15 years, and still on the Squire. I tried the Black Beauties on my Jazz 24 a few years ago and never looked back. I haven't tried the flatwounds but I'm confident they will be on my fretless P-bass as soon as I order some.(music stores here don't seem to stock DR anymore, you have to order 'em)

I found DR Hi-Beams about 6 years ago and never looked back (although I have tried some different DRs, which were also excellent strings). They are a little too bright at first, but after they are broken in for a few hours, they sound amazing. I always keep a few sets on hand, even though they last forever.
