Drill press problem

Is there any galling on the shaft of the bit? The few times I've had a bit slip, it showed up as scratches or gouges on the bit shaft. Grasping at straws here, the chuck itself is a press fit on the drill shaft, right, maybe wrong Morse taper? Though in that case, the chuck itself would probably just fall out?
 
Still havent figured it out, but could this be it:

I noticed some markings on the spindle/shaft (not sure what it's called), and decided to do a test:

Tested some none marked parts, and they are all fine

Run out should be checked by hand WITHOUT the machine running. It appears that the quill is spinning, and that's a sure recipe to quickly destroy a dial indicator.

You have galling on the taper shaft as a result of spinning of the chuck at some point when it wasn't locked to the taper. That can keep you chuck from seating properly on the taper. In any case, the indicator is showing .004"-.005" of run out and that indicates a problem somewhere along the line that is beyond "normal" amount.

If it's an inexpensive machine that could be bearings, bent spindle, improperly machined spindle taper, or a variety of other causes.

There's a reason you're having difficulties with the check holding, so keep working toward a solution and you're going to eventually find the cause. You'll also learn a lot about machine processes that will serve you well in the future, like the need to run paddle bits at very low r.p.m.

Thing got weirder...
I took my drillpress back home, which makes it easier to check for me (my shop is a 30 minute drive, and at the moment I cant go there very often).

So.. took it back home, installed a chuck (same as in the clips I posted), pressed the on button: and it worked like it should.

I'm happy it works, but I have no clue what happened :)
 
There you go. It wanted to be home with you. Machines have feelings too.

I suspect that on your previous attempts to install the chuck, you had some dirt or grit in there which was preventing the taper from seating. A little bit of sawdust in a taper joint can fool you, because it doesn't jam into the metal and gall. It just squashes down and holds the surfaces apart. Then, you take it apart, wipe off the surfaces, and you don't see anything wrong.
