driving - Do you "signal" when changing lanes?

Personally have found it to be far worse in the south.

Reports from Southern California confirm: you can be conscientious about signaling on any freeway here and if it's even noticed it's not understood, and if it is somehow understood no one cares.

Far worse for me is the discrepancy regarding merging onto the freeway. I was always taught that you get up to speed with traffic, find a spot, and merge in. But many places I've lived people expect that you'll let them in and they don't have to do anything to merge. Madness, I tell you!

This is apparently universal in the states- has been 32 years since I drove in Orange and San Diego counties and it was the same there as anywhere on 95 from Presque Isle Maine to Miami or On I65 from Chicagoland to Gulf Shores AL.

I learned to drive in Maryland, was taught by my mom who also learned in Maryland, and drove this way in the DC, Maryland, No. Virginia area for many years without a problem. Moved to PA and all heck broke loose and it's just as bad here in CA.

Why aren't cell phones automatically disabled when they are moving at a rate at which humans don't naturally travel? Okay, maybe retain some basic functions, like hands-free calls. There's no need to browse FaceBook, etc. while driving.

The simple reason that, passengers enjoy using phones as well. How do you determine who is a passenger vs who is driver?

Well it could come to the point where the ignition is initiated from an app on your phone. Not saying that's a good thing necessarily.

Always. It's just a habit at this point but most drivers I have to deal with while commuting just see it as their cue to speed up before I get the chance to change lanes (which is why I love my Camaro in these cases).

Then again, I live and drive within the DFW area so some jackass not signaling is the least of my problems.

It depends on how far in front of the other car that I am. It's about common sense.

I question whether everyone really does as they say here, when they are in the moment. I mean, I answered "Always" then I thought about it again.

Then there's the numbskulls who still indicate incorrectly on roundabouts after govt botched the changeover in our turning give way rule communications ten years ago.

The rules on roundabouts never changed!!!! So why are you indicating you are turning away from me when turning into my lane?!!!!

I was taught to signal leaving the roundabout, too. I must be the only person that ever does that around here...

...I almost get more annoyed by the nitwits who will start the signal as they actually execute the maneuver. By that time it's just a little late, and we can see what's about to happen anyway. Start the signal ahead of time, to give your fellow drivers (and cyclists, and pedestrians) a chance to adjust their actions accordingly!

When I become king, this will be punishable by death. Brake lights then turn signal... grrrr.
