Yeah the bass whammy is not a drop that’s not you solution. The best sounding one I’ve found for bass ( I think the Digitech sounds good on guitar but agree it’s wonky sounding on bass ) is the simple pitch block in the Line 6 Helix Stomp or HX FX. It tracks excellent and there’s only the ever so slightest , barely there have to intentionally listen for other wise you’ll never notice it artifact. It works and sounds great to about -5/6 semi tones which is enough to turn a 4 string into a faux 5 string.
Define "works." They all work to one degree or another, but they all have drawbacks, and none of them are going to sound identical to the real thing.
None work perfect.
I use the Digitech Drop pedal for LIVE music to mostly to go back and forth between Standard and Flat seemlessly (again, its not perfect).
If i plan on recording in a dropped tuning, i will have a bass designated for that tuned and set up appropriately to said dropped tuning.

The Line 6 M series beat out the Eventide H9 for me. I just needed quick way to get a drop d tuning for a couple of songs per set at the time. The sound/tracking was better to my ears than the much more expensive Eventide box (which is a great unit and did some things better than the M9). I wouldn't play an entire show with any of available pedals out there. The "real" thing can't be replicated.
You might look at the EH Pitchfork and see if you like how that sounds. Other wise Line 6 HX Stomp really has the only one I’ve tried I consider usable, if not perfect. but I get that’s an expensive solution. However the HX stomp does have a ton of other great sounding FX for bass. so you’d get that as a bonus.

I use the digitech drop. My band plays everything tuned down. I use the drop and no one can hear any issues.
The newer bass whammy whole step and 4th down work well enough for gigging imo. But if you’re looking for a half step down it’s not there. The only way to get half step down on a bass whammy is to use the full step down and then use the rocker to find it in the middle. Some folks like the pitchfork but I’m not familiar with it.
I think with all these pitch shifting type pedals what you run them into makes a huge difference. For example our rythm guitarist uses a drop for full step down. It sounds a lot better through his fractal rig than it did through his Mesa rectifier rig. I think the more processed your tone is after the pitch shifter the more natural it will sound. So try running them into an overdrive for example before your amp instead of trying to run them directly into your amp with nothing on in between.
