DRUGS & BOOZE

Munji just fired me. His guitar player is putting me in jail.

I am hoping to hire tzer as my defense lawyer. I am listening to
staindbass on the way to my court appearance, and I am
horribly depressed. Must be all that anxiety and stuff.

Even my pet pig has been getting high lately. Life just blows.
:smug:

Thats A FLAT OUT LIE!.... check your Facts Man!: Invalid Link Removed

Just google it yourself if you don't believe me but the list from most to least addictive drugs is as follows:

  1. Nicotine
  2. Heroin
  3. Cocaine
  4. Alcohol
  5. Caffeine
  6. Marijuana
Only 10%-14% of Regular Marijuana users are addicted whereas more "accepted" and widely used drugs like caffeine, alcohol, and nicotine have proven to be some of the most addictive drugs in existence today.

..... :spit:

As much as I agree with you (and dude, I agree with you pretty much one hundred percent), I'd add meth WAYYYYYYYYYYY high up on that list.

No matter how anyone might want to rationalize or intellectualize
the degree or how addictive drug _______, ________ or _______ is (Sure the prior list speaks more about "Physical not just mental addiction), It's actually not the drug itself that causes issues.
(IMO,IME) It's not just the drug that's taken into account in recovery, it's the case that someone would choose to alter their mood, personality etc, not just take mood altering substances, many times there will be other underlying psychological issues that go with this. But all this is a matter of choice in what what you do, I'm not one to preach to somebody, or give advice. (unless it's asked for at least).

By the way - how's that 'bong-bass' PVC upright you built recently? ;)

Just kidding!!! It's a real-deal PVC bass - a really cool one too, but I couldn't help myself.

This is issue is affecting your band's performance pure and simple. Approach the issue from that stand point and stay clear of "life style choices", they'll either straighten up or it's time for some personnel changes. Of course a bassist and drummer with no-nonsense professional attitudes shouldn't have a problem attracting more "together" players. A dependable rhythm section is worth it's weight in gold and told let any drunken "front man" tell you different.

Ahh, I'll let it go, only because of the thread topic ;) Actually theres 3 of them right now (not counting the 2 prototypes)

Yeah It happens, Right now, it's taken a back seat to another project :atoz:. I have to build a custom case for my 6'er, which is being refinished by another Tb'er. http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=452250
But I'll get back to it pretty soon, besides my Uncle, that has been very interested in the project, is currently in Boating/Fishing mode, so that'll put a hook in it now :p

“If you don't think drugs have done good things for us, then take all of your records, tapes and CDs and burn them. Cause you know what? The musicians that made all that great music that's enhanced your lives throughout the years? Real fu**ing high on drugs. The Beatles were so fu**in' high they let Ringo sing a few songs."

That is comedy gold, my friend!!!

Myself & the drummer stay sober at the gig. I allow myself a bud around midnight.

The front man & guitard smoke their brains out and or drink like a lot. Front man says it loosens him up so he can perform & the crowd digs it. This of course, is all in his mind.
He gets loose alright, but forgets lyrics, structure & Can't make a sound song choice decision after midnight. Guitard holds his own but says & does stupid crap, as most drunks do. Kinda embarrassing.

It's not enough to ruin the show, but it does bug me when mistakes are made because of drugs & booze.

Get yourself a kids band and tour your states libraries . Cause this is rock and roll and people have drug and alcohol problems. It comes with the territory. Some are better then others about controlling it.

I like to smoke, I like to drink, and I like to party as much as the next rock star. However, I never do these things at a gig, that's what an after party is for. It just isn't worth the risk to me. What if I get a little high before a gig and miss one note. Sure, one note in the grand scheme of a gig may seem insignificant, but I'll always think in the back of my mind, "would I have missed that note had I been completely sober?" Maybe, maybe not, but I've got enough things on my mind before and during a gig to worry about things like that.

I also feel like I owe it to my fellow band members. If I screw up, we screw up. The audience doesn't care who screws up, it reflects the band as a whole. My guitarist doesn't do drugs or drink during a show, so it'd be pretty unfair to him if my screw up from impairment left people thinking less of his playing or of our band as a whole.

Just my thoughts, take them as you will.

Also a smart club owner doesn't want a drunk drugged up band ... the band is there to work not to get trashed ...

When I play out I start with a water then I have a beer then a water then a beer then a water ... by then it is time to pack up and go home ... I am still sober but I had some fun.

I agree, I'm 57 and have never ben drunk or stoned in y life, so all this is weird for me. All I can say is I have fun playing sober.Everything is always in the proper perspective, the music, my playing, interaction with the crowd and management.

I say;"Wake Up Guys, it's not not 1970"

No helping friends or relatives move to a new house prior to night of gigging.
Everyone must get eight hours sleep the night before the gig.
No fights with girlfriend before or during a show.
A shower before the gig is necessary for the health of bandmates and the crowd. Hey brush your teeth too for that matter.
No working with sheet metal in week prior to gig,
Deaths in the family will not be tolerated, and I dare not say, no divorces either.

Each of the above can interfere with a persons mind and/or body, thus the performance that evening. Just how far do you want to go on this imposing of your will thing? I will agree on the problem drinking thing. In general some of my best nights have been after toking, and some of the worst have been straight, but then vise versa too. I believe my state of mind had little effect on the show as a whole, but maybe my individual playing somewhat. I never claimed to any bandmate that my name was Jaco....

I always find myself surprised when faced with the stigma of jazz cigarettes. I was once at a gig with a group i play with occasionally but with a fresh drummer. During break i went out and got reef'd up with some folks. After the gig the drummer (who was sober) told me he was really impressed with my playing and wanted to use me in other projects. He said at first he wasnt sure if it was going to be "one of those gigs" (worried about the reefer) but after the gig he said we 'fit like a glove'.

Personally, I will abstain from reefer situationally.

Alcohol is a completely different beast. One time the guitar player was so drunk by the 3rd set he couldnt remember the chords to songs we had been playing for THREE years. Absolutely pathetic. We sat him down the next day and he was really embarassed about his indulgence and has since only drank 1 or 2 beers until after we are done playing.

I always smoke before/during shows. Being high helps me cut loose and be part of the crowd, relieves stage fright, and makes me really feel the music. I have had numerous people tell me I sound better when I'm high, singing and playing bass. Don't stop what works. My band plays alot of music that is made up on the spot, and our audience absolutely loves that. I and many others feel that we are much much more creative with our playing, and we transition much better as well. Weed has never steered me wrong when it comes to music, so I will continue to do it.

Everyone must get eight hours sleep the night before the gig. Not enough sleep? Toke this, you'll be fine.
No fights with girlfriend before or during a show. She did WHAT?! That b****, here have a beer.
A shower before the gig is necessary for the health of bandmates and the crowd. Hey brush your teeth too for that matter. Man, you smell, lets go hotbox your car.
No working with sheet metal in week prior to gig, Sounds like youve been working hard? Let me buy you a shot.
Deaths in the family will not be tolerated, and I dare not say, no divorces either. Man, thats a bummer. Lets go get some tall cans and smoke some bud.

I play in a band with a bunch of drunk stoner. I'm one myself. When it comes to shows I have the tZ approach. If you can execute your performance well, I dont care what you do. Now, I wouldnt have some junkie in my band in the first place, so thats not a worry. One of my players doesnt like to smoke before a gig, and usually doesnt drink much. The others, and myself, partake in moderation. I find it funny that the sober one is usually saying 'Man, we sounded good tonite' when I myself am thinking 'It was good, but could have been better'.

It is self-deceiving to thing one sounds better, or is more creative while stoned or with more than one or two drinks depending on your personal tolerance for etoh).
Maurice:cool:

I'd disagree, they where called Jazz Cigarettes for a reason...

Personally I think it all depends on the style and the musician and the place and time. Set and Setting.

I will smoke if I'm jamming and I honestly believe I come up with better **** more often than not and that its easier to feel the groove without strictly adhering to the usual patterns. I make recordings BTW, this isn't just gut feeling, I'm going back and listening to my playing while sober.

I feel like the slower tempo stuff/the stuff with the least changes is best for indulgence, otherwise it gets to be more of a hindrance.

The band I'm in now is not that type of gig though, we are a cover group so I stick to a beer while I set up and a beer per set...maybe a shot if someone is buying...It's more hard rock oriented so smoking wouldn't do me much good/I have a lot of progression to remember.

You can do Nothing better impaired .Thats not a maybe its just a fact. some great and very succesful musians were durg addicts and while they were stoned out of their minds they became creative and did some amazing stuff. what could they have done with their Full potential ? and alot of the greats are dead and died way too young because of their drugs. Another thing that brought out creativity in some of the greats was the fact that they had mental disorders-of some sort, hence their brains did not function like a normal brain, and they were able to go places that most cant even dream of going. But for the rest of us - IMPARIED is exactly that IMPAIRED. you only kid yourself.
