DRUGS & BOOZE

60 Minutes voice over: At fifty two Eric Clapton is one of rock's great survivors. Having beaten heroin and booze he can now see how close they came to destroying him and his music.

60 Minutes: Do you think it's a myth that musicians play better when stoned?

EC: I think it's an absolute, um it's a farce to, to, to...
I subscribed to that because I had no choice for a good deal of my,
I mean that was a fantastic defence mechanism, which I think artists
use to cover the fact that they're not too sure of how good they are.

60 Minutes: Do you think you wasted time?

EC: I do, yes I do. The problematic thing with drugs
is that at the onset it feels so damn great you don't
believe there is a price. My experience is there is, and it far outweighs
the moments of pleasure that you get.

Well Said....Eric

I am certainly not a Bible thumper or have a holier than thou attitude.....every human being has the right to choose their own path...ingest substances.....etc.

What I had to look at and continue to look at is...how do my action affect others....whether it be a relationship on a musical, educational..spiritual level. It gets to be very self centered when I think my decisions and behaviors only hurt myself....and continue with a ****'em if they don't like it attitude.
Peace

really? manson, NIN, slipknot, Korn, foo fighters, rhcp, metallica (i'm sure they still party it up), mudvayne...
seem to be doing well

"clean" non survivors: backstreet boys, n' sync, :)

"clean" current popular bands
emo

hell, if that's the case, give me a beer and smoke, now!

For what it's worth, AJ from Backstreet Boys was a drunk and went to rehab for it.

Same goes for Chris from N*Sync I believe.

I agree with tZer, and others who said it's all about the personal responsibility and self-control. Know your own limits, in the context of your band. Stay within those limits and do a good show. Step outside those limits, and be prepared for consequences.
When I was a full time player in LA, I had more work offers than I could handle, largely because I had a reputation as a guy who wouldn't get stupid during the gig. I did my share of partying, and it wasn't a secret, but I almost never got out of control. That served me well. These days, I barely do anything. For me, the hangover is just not worth it.
I would find Munji's situation a bit restrictive, but if it works for him, cool. I was once in a band with a deputy sheriff, and he drank more than me.

I feel really lucky to be in a band where everybody has fun, but there's a healthy amount of pressure to always play at your best. The bandleader is no-drinky, no-smoky - but only expects that the rest of us be on top of our game. One guy likes to drink and smoke, but knows he can't play his leads under the influence so he abstains 'till post-gig. One guy has been stoned continually for about 40 years and operates just fine that way. Another guy has a beer per set, but doesn't smoke. And I like a wee toke and just one beer per gig. In eight months I've never looked at a bandmate and thought he wasn't at his best due to substance use. Nobody wants to let the other guys down.

We opened for another band last weekend and their guitarist was guzzling drinks before his set. I turned to one of my guys and said, "I'm so glad to be playing material that's too tricky to do if you're drunk."

There are three times the known carcinogens in marijuana than in tobacco. That being said, there haven't been enough studies on marijuana to know if it will kill you like tobacco does.

????

some food for thought:

the us gov center for drug awarness releases stats on deaths due directly to drug use (in other words drunk driving isn't included, just diseases caused by the alcohol itself, etc). alcohol and tobacco are always on top. and cannabis is always last; it causes zero deaths in the u.s. believe it or not, caffine even kills a few people each year.

also, i thought i would throw in this recent story:

The drug & alcohol corridor.

Drugs never bothered me too much.I used to smoke tons of reefer.Messed with all the others too.Never had too much of a problem getting off them. All of them.

The stupidest thing I've ever done in my life is to start drinking!

It's been very hard for me to quit! It's physically addicting.I don't get falling down drunk,I have a high tolerence for booze. After a while I need it just to make me feel normal.I keep on trying to quit & I fail.I'm trying again. The jury's out on if I've done permanent damage to myself or not.

It's affected my health, weight, relationships,my finances & my career.

I would of had a much more impressive career as a bass player if I never touched booze.

I don't blame any one but myself. For some people it's coke, for some it's smack ,for some reefer ,you never know what addictables are going to hit you the worst.

I work with a lot of guys who drink moderatly at a gig & they are fine.I work with guys who smoke a littlle bit at gigs & they are OK.

I also work with a guy who drank heavily for years. He stopped about 12 years ago.Now he smokes more weed than 10 rastas. All the time smoking. It's affecting his playing in a bad way.All he did was trade one addiction for another.

And I see up & coming musicians falling in the same trap. One guy I know(great looking guy, fine guitarist, women fall all over him & a real nice guy) who has his 1ST major record out ,touring, etc.gets toilet hugging drunk all the time.A young female singer/song writer(just turned 19)who has so much God given potential, whose family I'm friendly with, tells me "Yeah,I just got out of rehab"like it's some rock n'roll badge of honor! I wanted to smack her. I did tell her that that was nothing to be proud of & to stop wearing it on her sleeve.I love this girl as if she were my daughter & I hope she doesn't blow it.She has a great shot at music & a great careerin the making.

I don't mean to come off as a preachy bore, I can only tell you booze has been an absolute horror show for me.Trying to get clean when you are older is really hard.

Do have fun but back off every now & then.

Remember all the greats who died from this.

Above all be careful Brothers & Sisters.PLEASE be careful.

I was sober, but the rest of the band got trashed. It was so rough, the drummer didn't even play the last set; we had to do it acoustic. Needless to say, we won't be getting hired for that gig again...

That is funny.;)

I love to drink but on gigs I only have a couple all night.

The only reasons are a) I have to drive home and b) I am just not a good enough musician to play hammered!

A really nice thread this is. I am always clean when I jam. It's not that I can't play hammered or stoned out of my head, it's just I don't like it. I want to "take hold of the moment." Afterwards I smoke and drink whatever I want.

I notice that most metal bands were/are under the influence of drugs and alcohol. Do you know any known metal bands that didn't do the stuff. Or just ocassionally a joint and drink a bear or two, if you know what I mean. For example I know members of Linkin Park for example didn't do drugs.

Well said.....

Cannabis causes Zero deaths because everyone knows its just a "gateway drug" ...even i learned that In D.A.R.E in 6th grade. Its not physically addictive.

however the mental effects are what you keep going back for...:D

I never tried weed before playing, but some booze definitely takes the gig to an upper level fun-wise, IMO. Such as 5-6 shots of tequila with a bottle of beer, where I normally get drunk (not losing control but barely can stand up and walk straight :)) on 13-14 shots approx. I had this guitar player on my other band, it was great fun hangin' around with him before & after the gigs with some booze, so drinking a bit before the gig and playing side by side, making jokes between the songs and stuff like that, then continuing drinking after the gig was fun.

I might show up to practice drunk one day, I think it's no biggy if it doesn't happen constantly, I would just apologize to the band members for that and never do that again if they really got uncomfortable. But I would never go on stage as totally trashed. I think it's disrespectful to the audience, band members and the organizators of the gig. Nothing should get in front of the music on gigs, and that includes a drunk guy trying not to fall off from stage and can't put his finger on a fret.

used to play with a friend of mine who was a complete pothead all the time.funny thing is he had impeccable timing, never missed a gig,was a laugh and know one(except the band)new he was high all the time.but.....as soon as the umpteenth beer hit him, usually at the start of the 2nd set,he'd slur his words, hit the wrong chord/s swear too much and show the rest of us up.as a close friend of mine i was on the verge of saying so when the band imploded(for other reasons)and i never got round to it.as for me.....i'll have a beer but thats all and i don't do dope.cos it makes you dopey, thats why its called dope.as for the rest of us musicians...what ever floats your boat.
