Drummer issue, stop me if you've heard this

drummer-boy will be at rehearsals tomorrow. we're going to have a good talk with him. if he's not going to treat us or the band with respect then it'll be all business real quick. so, he's not technically fired yet but we're going to see how he responds based on real clear guidelines that we're going to set for what is expected and that we're serious about the direction of the band. if he's not willing or able to handle the level of responsibility then he's gone immediately. zero tolerance moving forward.

we still have jams set up for Friday, Sunday and Tuesday with other drummers so we'll have clarity on possible backups/replacements.

Sounds like a plan.

Yeah that sounds like a good plan. Definitely follow through with the other drummers though either way... your drummer will likely get very apologetic and try to convince you to cancel on them. Let him know you're serious, and hey if you click with another drummer consider replacing him. His past actions speak fairly loud, and good chance that he'll fall back into his old habits regardless of what he says... then again 11 years is a long time to change your habits.

Respect, committal, discipline, reliability, time, and communications. -- If any of these attributes are missing in any band member, then it presents a major issue that invariably threatens the viability of the band.

In the case of your drummer, it appears that all of these elements have gone missing. Friend or no friend, life's just way too short to put up with this problem that won't go away on its own.

Ouch.

It's "Do unto others how you would like them to do unto you"

not "Do unto others how they do unto you."

This guy is long gone. I always show up on time for practice, come to practice knowing my parts, I shower regularly, and I have good equipment and I'm a social drinker and I also do gigs (fill-ins) with folks who are at a higher level than I am. I learn from these guys and believe me as you move up and start playing with some serious musicicians you only get one chance. Music is supposed to be fun, but as you get more experience and start moving up in skills and the people you play with it's a whole new arena. Respect for your time and others time is paramount. The guys I play with some time go from rehearsal to a gig, to another gig in one day. No time to deal with losers. I may have been too severe in my response but it seems like he's been given many chances over and over. Sounds like he's a functional user.

Sounds like he's a functional user.

Using functional in the loosest possible sense, I'd say. Sad and difficult situation, but if you guys want to keep moving forward, I'd say it's pretty clear he ain't your guy. As upsetting as it may be to cut him loose, just imagine how great it's going to be working with someone who not only takes the commitment seriously, but has his life set up properly to support that commitment!
