Drummer issue, stop me if you've heard this

yeah, after years on TB I'm dreading the fact that I am now posting my own thread about drummer issues. Due to the emotional attachment I think I need outside views for clarity sake. This is the most recent story, he has a back story 10 miles long and disappeared on us the first time we broke up 6 years ago without much of a reason or a word. This was at the same time when he was supposed to be a groomsman in my wedding. We've forgiven him for that but anyways, I digress.

We're an original band and we've been playing together for nearly 11 years off and on. The drummer has been like my little brother and is usually a really good friend. He's got some emotional issues and definitely has no control over where he puts his pen!s. for instance, this rather new booking agent has been hooking us up with a lot of good shows the last few months. Turns out, it's because he banged her! But I'd like to think it's also because we really are one of the better original acts in town and we bring people. She is so nasty that she doesn't even register as a female to the rest of us.
He has had a history of arrests, DUI's and the such but over the last year he has generally put that behind him and has definitely matured and stayed out of trouble. He has a steady job that pays him decent (even though child support (2 kids, 2 mommas) then sucks him dry) but he is constantly missing practice/rehearsals because he has to "work late". I think he's just exhausted from work most of the time. But even when he shows up we only get a good hour and a half with him before he's telling us he only has 1 song left in him before bed time. He does have to be at work at 5am though. gets defensive that if he falls asleep at work he could lose a finger. ok but still. we're all working stiffs that make sacrifices and put the time in.

The part that makes it difficult is that he is a founding member from 11 years ago and has always been our drummer. He's also one of the best drummers in town and doesn't necessarily need much time at all to pick up a new song, contribute, and play it like he's played it a million times.

Last week he missed practice on Monday. "Had to work late" was the text we got. Then Wednesday he showed up at the rehearsal space and only brought the hardware that didn't belong to him. He told us that all of his equipment was in his girlfriend's car at work and that he had to go get it. What doesn't make sense is that he only used one car to transport all of that equipment from the show that weekend so why is it now split between cars? We openly encourage and most of us do play with other bands for cash, fun, etc. so that can't be it. He never returned to practice that night, never answered any calls or texts. nothing. we were calling him all the rest of the week and weekend with not much of a word from him. He texts our guitarist on Friday saying he was arrested for an out of state warrant for food stamp fraud. then we didn't hear from him until just a minute ago.

Over the weekend we were fed up and contacted a half dozen of the best drummers we knew in town and so far 4 really amazing and professional drummers have enthusiastically agreed to come jam and try out with us. We have shows lined up that we can't just cancel.

Well, Mr. Drummer calls me and tells me that he was in jail (for just 6 hrs that Wed night) due to the out of state food stamp fraud warrant but his lawyer and the local police confirmed it was because someone stole his identity. That is his story. Says he's feeling better and had just been really depressed the last few days and he asks when we're jamming this week.

I feel like I stepped in it a bit and I kind of feel bad here. But I don't want to look like a douche for cancelling these jams with these amazing drummers over the course of the next week. some are really excited about it and could be an upgrade. I'm excited to play with some of these guys too!
Goodness, what do I do here? I know it seems obvious but the emotional attachment makes this tough.

1. *Has had a history of arrests* is IMO inaccurate- he has a history of arrests(as in it's his, & is not going away because he feels bad about the way he is or has been)
2. HUGE *yeah* on getting your priorites figured out- on that note, you can't change others, you can only change yourself
3. I would check the other guys out, if only to be fair to them, but equally because you may well need one of them

Waaaaay too much drama. You already know the answer here. He is under impression that he has to show 0 respect to your band and no matter what you guys will always take it. Question is, is he right?

Drummers don't come with a 'How To' guide but they should. A troubleshooting PDF would help as well.
OK ask your self this:

" What if that had happened in the few scant hours before an important show, then what?"

Tough call to be sure, but I think you're being flimflammed, after all who in their right mind steals a drummers identity?

:D

Yup, this is 100% correct.

I used to play with a drummer like the one the OP is describing in an old band. He was a "nice guy" and a great drummer. He was perpetually late or would no show practices, showed up to a show obviously high, etc. Had trouble with the law, always seemed to have some drama going on with whatever girlfriend, etc.

That band eventually imploded, and a lot of it had to do with us giving him way too long of a leash. You know what though? There are always other drummers out there, and some actually do come "drama free."

He'd be gone in my band. I'll take average drummers who want to work hard and improve and show up on time over this crap any day. I also keep my friends and my band separate. Not that my friends can't be in my bands. but I tell them straight up if we're not prepared and you're the problem I have no problem finding someonel else. We'll still remain friends if you want but you won't be in my band.

We're an original band and we've been playing together for nearly 11 years off and on. The drummer has been like my little brother and is usually a really good friend.

Have you had a heart to heart with him to express your concerns? Have you given him the "please shape up because you are an important member of the band and we don't want to replace you but if forced to we will" speech?

If not maybe he doesn't realize the stress he is putting on your relationship and the band. Sounds like he's embroiled in his own personal dramas and taking the band for granted. Give him an ultimatum as a wake-up call before you cut him loose.

If you are his friend then you need to think qabout him. At this point in his life, it seems as though being in a band is taking away from his opportunity to pull himself out of the **** box he created for himself. Letting him go from the band will be good for you and the band...but may prove to be even better for him so that he might get all of his $h!t in one sock.

yeah, it sounds like he put on a good front when face to face. I was in a band with someone like that for a long time. Someone who was like family to me. and i used to quit bands because he would quit. He is still a good friend of mine. though one day i saw the light. its a very touchy situation. Luckily, things kind of worked themselves out. he realized how much music meant to me..and took a backseat. Now i am in a wonderful band, with people who actually want to play music, with people who never skip practices. Its easy to stick with friends who play music. though when you finally realize there are other people out there who want to do exactly what you are doing..then you will see.

I say fire him dude. people like that never change, and if they do, its a rarity

I play in an originals band and I know it takes allot of work to do it. All music takes work and time but to me it has to be fun. If it is fun all the work is worth it and I'm down 100%. But... a difficult band member takes away the fun and makes more work..I don't like that.
My vote would be remove the person taking the fun away from the band. If that is not possible I would remove myself.

This can be easier than it seems. Give him the same amount of respect that he has given you. Let him come late to another practice to discover another cat playing drums. This will send a message loud and clear and you don't have to sugar coat it. Yes you've been replaced. You never bothered to make it to practice on time, or really show any more interest, you make excuses, so we didn't bother to tell you that you had been replaced. Nuff said. and by the way, we can still be friends if you want.

Ouch.

It's "Do unto others how you would like them to do unto you"

not "Do unto others how they do unto you."

drummer-boy will be at rehearsals tomorrow. we're going to have a good talk with him. if he's not going to treat us or the band with respect then it'll be all business real quick. so, he's not technically fired yet but we're going to see how he responds based on real clear guidelines that we're going to set for what is expected and that we're serious about the direction of the band. if he's not willing or able to handle the level of responsibility then he's gone immediately. zero tolerance moving forward.

we still have jams set up for Friday, Sunday and Tuesday with other drummers so we'll have clarity on possible backups/replacements.
