He's not a musician. He's a wanna be. Just wants to hang out with you guys.We have about 20 songs we know and he's asking to learn more but we can't even nail down the ones we already play. If I could only get him to start listening to us and the original recordings in a critical way. His approach - "I heard it - I'll just feel it out."
You tell this dude to swing and he rolls his eyes. You tell him to play a shuffle and he plays this odd disco sorta beat. Mention a backbeat and he goes cross-eyed![]()

So what do I consider good? This. Funky, deep pocket, great chops but not overpowering. From our own faulknersj's band:
The guitar player and I are ready to start scouting for more musicians but how could we possibly bring in someone with any kind of talent with this type of drummer? Its embarrassing.
Am I too late to +1 this?I have never seen a good band with a bad drummer.
Why recruit more talent when your drummer's groove-impaired? It's like taking a loan to custom paint a car with a blown engine.
Our drummer sucks too! All he can do (and not even do well) is the simple bass drum on 1 and 3 and snare on 2 and 4 and eighth notes on hi hats. I wanted to play some Rumba Blues which requires him to hit bass drum on the 1, the and of 2, and the 4. Apparently this was like asking a 3rd grader if they have mastered calculus. He reverts back to the 1 and 3 thing and kills the whole groove. I will confess I have wanted to strangle him on numerous occassions.Has anyone ever had a drummer that can't groove no matter how much you try to work with them? Has anyone ever found a solution?
Problem:
counts instead of feels
won't take advice
tries to show-off and loses timing
over-plays and changes the rhythm of the songs (double kick in Jessie's girls)
plays on top of bass solo's
Can't find the pocket
HEEEEELP!
Haha yes...... I lol'd. Gonna use that someday. The guitarist and I used to call the old bands drummer "sneakers in a dryer".

Or you can keep complaining about it here as if that will somehow make a difference.
