I think it makes a difference. I found out the hard way that my...err..um...balding head created a freakish visual from a show we tried to video. We had a nice light truss above head, and behind, two HD video cameras, and the only thing we could see is my beacon of a head. It actually caused glare so bad you couldn't see the lead singer half the time.
On a side note, I played with a drummer for two years before I realized he was completely bald. He always wore a hat. I asked him why, and he made the obvious comment about "who wants to look at that?".
Now, I appreciate all the comments about "X doesn't have to worry, he's bald and gets gigs". Do you really think X player would have "made it" if they didn't fit some preconceived image or at least try to mask or hide something about their appearance that helped them fit that image?
