Drummers Bald Head on TV

Hey guys, thanks for all your input on this subject.

It is for real, recording is in a couple of weeks time.

Many of the replies made me laugh, as you can guess it was a serious question, but with just a little tongue in my cheek.

I'll attempt to summarize my responses here:

I'm hearing all the "just be bald and proud" and "TV is image", so I will make my suggestions to the band in general and see what they come up with. As someone said, it's community TV, no one will be watching, that made me laugh too.

We range in age 43-53 years old and play original new-wave/post-punk inspired by B52s/Dead Kennedys/Pistols/Devo. We have a retro-B movie/sci fi / satirical vibe in the songs, so we' been talking about looking suitably steampunk/mad scientist for the show.

As I write this drummer has said he will wear spaghetti-strainer hat (as worn my devotees of the Great Spaghetti Monster) so hopefully that will happen.

I think looking utterly bonkers (me in robot-xray-glasses and white coat) on TV should be good.

Once it's broadcast (prob December) I'll post a link to video on here.

Thanks again TBer's.

Ha! Lol. :)

I'm wondering out loud how many folks here that have a problem with the poor drummers head are the same ones that proudly wear Squire on their headstocks and don't care what anybody thinks about it and that it's just shallow to care about Such things and it's what you do with the bass that counts, not the name on the headstock. Etc. Etc....Lol:D

I realize the OP is being lighthearted about this... Not looking to start something... :)

Hi there, long time bald guy, first time caller.

Let me chime in by saying, have you personally polled all the women you know and asked them about baldness? In my own experience, 90% of women don't give a rat's ass about baldness and the other 10% think it's hot.

I'm afraid this is all in your hair-laden heads. Baldness doesn't matter one iota on television or not. Especially for a band in their 40's and 50's. If image is everything, how do you think being a bunch of washed up old rockers is going to affect your image?

Speaking myself as a washed up bald old rocker... :D

Amen to that!

There is nothing wrong with being bald...except when you try to cover it up and hide your baldness, be it with a hat, comb-over, or shaving it completely like everyone seems to be doing these days! Embrace the baldness! Who really cares? me, segerstrom.jpg

Wait your in your 40s to mid 50s playing B-52s and devo hahahaha and your concerned about a balding head??? Well I can see that a mature looking fellow can ruin your look on a band stand when your playing "devo" hahaha!!! Do you do a dress up "kiss" set too???? Hey don't be to concerned, copy this thread and read it in a few years you'll get a good laugh out of it or you might actually cry for a while! Good luck on your dress up gig, poor Drummer!
Doc.

We range in age 43-53 years old.

43-53, Correct me if I'm wrong, but the whole image thing, young and pretty had passed most guys by in that range.

My response to the initial concern would be;

At you guys age, what does it matter.

That would be your experience of being a bald guy asking a woman the question directly face-to-face. What kind of beeyotch is going to respond "you're a nice guy, Beej, but your chrome dome is ugly as hell and I wouldn't do ya if it cured cancer"?

Not belittin' baldies, wear it proud brotha, just pointing out your results of "100% are cool with it" are tainted by the polling environment.

^ spoken like a true hair head! :D Honestly, how about YOU go ask all the ladies you know and see what the answers are. In my own experience, personal grooming, style, tact, confidence, grace and nice shoes are pretty much all they ask for - weird subcultures and teenybopper bimbos notwithstanding. Hair or not, as long as it's groomed well, you're golden...

"Inspired by", not "Doing covers of" or "Devo Tribute band".

and bluewine, "image" doesn't just mean "young and pretty". Everyone projects an image don't they? We think it does matter. One can look nice and interesting in their 40s and 50s, without trying to dress young. There have been several threads on TB about all that, and I think the consensus (if there could be said to be one) was that one should be oneself, but maybe just a bit smarter than the audience.

VWbug08: we DON'T care about names on headstocks (proud Squier bassist here)... not sure if that falls into your category or not, I was a bit confused by your post. But yeah don't start anything some people care A LOT about such things, haha.

Washed up? We do the washing up. :D

Thanks for the tips on being attractive women, not really in it for that, tho. (Good job really, wife would batter me to DEATH)

Anyway, having had a think about it all and watched other acts attempts at "dressing up" for TV, we have come to the conclusions:

(1) Unless you have a mega-budget for professional costumes, it will look rubbish.

(2) Looking scruffy/casual looks MORE scruffy on TV for some reason.

(3) Shades (on TV) looks like you are trying too hard to be cool

(4) Bald heads are the shiniest objects known to man. :hiding:

Just kidding... the sun is the most shiny (bald heads are 2nd).

Thanks for all the input guys.
:bassist::bassist::bassist:

You say that like it's a bad thing. :hmm:

Shiny is in, man! The shinier, the better. Cars, motorcycles, guitars, noggins, ... EVERYTHING is better shiny! That's why polish is so popular! Shine on, you crazy diamond...

Nuttin' wrong with shades, either, 'cuz when you're this cool, the sun always shines.

With my New York brim and my gold tooth displayed,
Nobody give me trouble cause they know I got it made.

I'm in that age range and just about every band around here in the 40's and 50's are populated with beer bellys, baldies and grey beards. Most of those bands can rock your ass off. Image is super important for bands in their 20's.......if your demographic is 40 and 50 year olds....not so much.

So from the post it appears clear you are not aware of the things which tend to separate, KOL, etc, from the 6 million other better musicians who also happen to be bandmates. Focus on the music dude. The groove, if there is one will carry the day. You guys rock and no one will care about the drummer's head. You potentially making this such a big deal however, now that reality is something to examine in depth. And might be related to the truth surmised previously.
