I don' t fit in! I am not a drummer! I am a bassplayer!

But yes I play some drums. My first musical mentor was a drummer.

(you could take him to a restaurant because he also played the piano )

He told me that a good bassplayer should know to how to play the groove he wants his drummer to play.

And a good drummer should know how to sing a bass line while drumming.

Most drummers don' t read or write music.

Working with them (especially song writing) is easier when you know their instrument.

I also love to play latin percussion (congas, bongos) Drums are fun!!!

It is beneficial for any drummer to learn a chordal/melodic instrument to fully understand what is goin on musically in a song. I took up and played vibes in music school, in order to apply what I learned but before that I took up bass and got with a working band one month after that.

I don't play drums currently but seriously thinking about doing so. We are deeply connected to the drummer, so just seems natural and also beneficial to learn; it can only expand creativity.

There was a famous Keith Richards TV appearance (Saturday Night Live?) where he and his band played two songs. Drayton and Jordan switched instruments for the second one (bass and drums).

Vibes would be a natural pursuit for a drummer.
In fact, it was a surprise to me when I learned the iconic Jazz vibists were drummers earlier in their career.

Here's another example. Hana Sano is vocalist, drummer, and in recent years onstage guitarist for the Japanese band Gacharic Spin.


She was also bassist for a group called The Spade 13 at one point.


I saw it claimed someplace that Gacharic Spin's leader and bassist F. Chopper Koga thinks Hana is a better bassist than she is.

My childhood love was drums but my mum insisted I study classical guitar…so I did … went from school marching band drums to drumming in bands… obsessed …

kept the guitar studies up, on and off… stints in bands as a guitarist…then moved to bass…

these days I carry drum sticks and a pad, I own one snare drum…I practice drum rudiments as a hobby…and when I have down time from bass….

so I figure I am a bass player, born from an education on guitars and with a love of rudimental drumming …. I don’t have any unresolved desire or interest to play drums in bands …

I think the interest in drum technique and rudiments underpins a steadfast approach when I play bass … and enjoy working with drummers, I never tell a drummer what or what not to play, and when a drummer goes for the fills, I always leave plenty of room…

my favourite drummers are Jack Dejonette, Tony Williams and Ian Paice …

They say the first thing you swing will become your thing. I guess that's true. I kicked off drumming. Whatever I'm on, to a certain degree, I'll be shaping up as a drummer — fired like a Ming vase me. Dyed in the wool. Been at it for a little while now. Little feet held to the fire (the drummer). Don't mind this a bit. Rhythm's a good foundation, I think you'll find, regardless. I think, therefore I flam. Softly softly, marching home.
