all of the above, I wouldn't care. sounds like you do tho...

even at 69, when I play rock or funk and the band is cranking I jump around & dance, all the time. I wonder if the drummer doesn't like it.

Yeah. It wasn't over my head Poison style. More like at my side or right on top of the snare where I doubt anybody but him could see it. I thought it was funny that I didn't know I was doing it. I 've never been good at it and never sat down just to practice it, so I'd NEVER try it in front of a crowd on purpose. I have seen some guys that make it work while playing, but it needs to be a special deal during a solo or breakdown or something. Not nonstop through every song!

In my most humble opinion, you should be more concerned with getting your singer more up front in the mix than any stick twirling from your drummer....

Although she sounded ok in our monitors, the sound guy did seem frazzled that night. I've yet to see another video from that show, so I have no idea how well she really sat in the mix.

I played a couple of shows this weekend with a drummer I never played (nor rehearsed) with before. Every time I looked at him he was twirling his sticks while playing. Every time!

Would like to hear your thoughts and opinions on that .

If the Cat can play and twirl. Play and twirl on. If I could Twirl and play I'd do it too. If you're on stage I think that's the time to SHOW off. Nothing duller or more boring than watching a bunch of Cats standing still playing on stage. Looks like the Mannequin Challenge.

How long was the drum solo(s)?

Just stopped playing in another band where the drummer was the BL, and he brought a Neil Peart like kit to every gig. And a drum solo was mandatory. I originally only subbed for these guys, but they kept using me. Interesting thing was the guy was a great drummer who didn't overplay, a super nice guy, and the drum solos went over well. The band hated it and walked outside for every solo, but somehow it made me smile when he did them. This guy loves and lives for the drums. That's all he does, gigs and lessons... and doing that solo makes him happier than anything in the world. Hard to get upset... though I'm not playing with them anymore .

As for the twirler, a couple of vids went up on Facebook and I realize he wasn't doing it nearly as much as I imagined. What I think was happening was that any time me or the other guy (the BL) looked at him, he upped his performance... so it seemed like he was doing it all the time . Which struck me as being awkward or strange. He was a really good drummer, I just knew he was still not 100% confident on the songs (only had a week to learn 2 hrs. worth of mostly original material), so I thought the twirling was a little misplaced.

Iz all good, was really curious what the rest of the gang thought of this stuff.

I saw Jo Jones playing a concert with Dizzy Gillespie, James Moody, Ron Carter, and others, years ago ... and Jo Jones had just about the most impeccable timing of any drummer you could hope to see. He was at the heart of the Basie rhythm machine for years, and it doesn't get any more deep in the pocket than that. He was a showman, twirled his sticks, made big arm gestures where it fit, and generally just made everyone in the room feel the rhythm to their bones.

So yeah, twirl 'em if you got 'em ... but don't drop 'em or lose the groove.

JMac, for some reason the quote in your reply to Davey28 was attributed to me? Probably a forumware bug. I quote his original post below for clarity. For the record, Bonham is my 11th favorite drummer and he was indeed known as a voracious and capable twirler.

I used to think Tommy Lee was so cool in the 80's. Loved watching him play, although Bonham is my favorite drummer and I don't recall him twirling the sticks.

I don't mind a little showmanship if the drummer is good. Nothing over the top or too distracting though.

Everything in moderation. Constant twirling would be annoying and distracting. IMHO.
