Drummers who twirl their sticks

Twirling in moderation is cool. It's like seasoning a tasty dish. Easy does it. As long as not some Ricky Rockett 80s' peacock absurdity.

In my most humble opinion, you should be more concerned with getting your singer more up front in the mix than any stick twirling from your drummer....

I never do it while playing, but a guitar player I've played with for years mentioned that I was always spinning my sticks. I honestly had no idea what he was talking about, then I started noticing I did it between songs, alot more than I realized.
Can't stand it personally!I played a couple of shows this weekend with a drummer I never played (nor rehearsed) with before. Every time I looked at him he was twirling his sticks while playing. Every time!

Definitely a showmanship thing. If the band is having fun along with the audience, then why not.
Those are by far the highest cymbals I've ever seen on a jazz kit. Obviously set up that way to allow for rock grandstanding. Bizarre, but he's definitely getting his ya-yas out.
Drummers are the kids who couldn't sit still in grade school. Some of them more than others. If twirling their sticks keeps them from overplaying or standing up and conducting the band, maybe that's the best we can expect from someone with that level of inborn animal exuberance.

Thats cool as long as he keeps that beat no issues there.
When I was 19 my band had a steady gig at some local dive bar, one night the drummer may have had a few too many and we came to a part in a song (forgot which one) where the whole band stops dead and the drummer hits one clear ping on the bell of the cymbal on the next beat, as the drummer hit the bell the stick slipped out of his hand and hit every drum on it's way to the floor. It was so funny we had to stop, I think the drummer was laughing the loudest of us all.

A friend of mine did it for years, As long as the groove is nasty and deep and constant juggling if fine with me.
