DSMnoisemaker & Humboldt Electronics Simplifier Bass Station

Just got one. I’m afraid I got a lemon though. The cabsim on mine distorts and hums. Anyone else had a similar experience?

Haven't had a hum, but I have had a hiss in certain circumstances.
  1. What level of signal are you putting in? Does the active/passive switch help at all?
  2. Where do you have the mic position and cab sim blend set? I noticed if I went 100% wet on the blend or over about 2 o'clock on the mic position, I would get hiss in the signal.
  3. What is the gain on the preamp section? If I was picking up any noise in the preamp from boosting gain, the cab sim would make it more noticeable.

1. Tried both passive and active basses. Also flipped the active/passive. Didn’t make a difference.

2. With both cabsim dials at 9” it starts to distort. Even more noticeably with some of speaker size/type settings. Also it only distorts with the cabsim blended in. So the preamp or the parallell neither distort (or hums for that matter).

3. Gain at anywhere. Doesn’t really matter since the preamp section functions normally.

So I’ve been troubleshooting a bit and the hum and distortion seems to come from the cabsim section. The hum sounds like bad isolation or a ground loop.

Sent an email to DSM. We’ll see what’s up in a bit.

Sorry to hear about your unit being recalled. Hope you decide to try another because they really are a pretty slick little tool.

As @WhoopingHonky mentioned you can get a bit of hiss depending on mic position dial cab dial but shouldn't be anything too bad — especially when playing live.

Hi there!
We realized that on the new batch there was a wrong value capacitor that makes the cabsim signal too hot and saturates the signal too soon. Unfortunately, we used a single coil bass with a low-ish output to test each unit, so it sounded ok..but with higher output basses, it will clip..lesson learned..and got a humbucker active bass now to make sure the headroom is right.
So yes, we are trying to make it right and contacted all dealers who may have got these units (about 40 units with this issue were made) to recall all the units with these issues.

USA is not affected by this, we sent correct units and there will be 50 more shipping tomorrow to our distributor.

I have spent the last 10 days replacing the damn capacitor on each board..it was my typo on the bill of materials..so so sorry if this affected you, i am so embarrassed, after designing these complex contrived devices, a simple typo error, is humiliating..

If you got one of these, please, don't hesitate to contact the dealer, or info (at) simplifieramp (dot) com , or even me directly if you want to change the cap by yourself (i'm happy to help those who are good with the soldering iron). We will make everything in our reach to make it up.

love you guys, and thanks for your support

Accountability and communication. Exactly what everyone needs from any company. Awesome work to get on top of this so quickly.

Hi!

I just sent you a private DM. I would like to repair my unit myself instead of returning it. Get back to me and we’ll make this right. No worries!
