DTFs or Chromes for recording?

i have a stingray 5 with rounds I could bring too that be the best of both worlds but im not used to playing the songs on the 5.

Given the example, I would say fresh nickelwound strings are probably the best bet. Also you can ask your recording engineer before via email. They can give you guidance.
Personally on my recording experiment and given the genre, I would go with fresh nickelwounds.

I was thinking this could either be the best of both worlds with the tone knob or a compromise that fails both ways.

Having listened to the Instagram excerpt, I wouldn't worry about how fresh Chromes would sit in the mix; however, if there are spots in the song arrangements with only bass and drums, there is a chance you or the engineer may find them not aggressive enough. Or not. Bringing one bass with them and another with rounds is not a bad idea.

Well the basic in recording is that except unwanted noise, it is a lot easier to remove frequencies you don't want. So it is a lot easier to make Nickelwounds sound like Flats than the other way around. Steels seem to aggressive for the vibe so Nickels it is.
