dUg Ultra Bass 1000 - Tech 21

Thank you for the response. My comments were based on personal experiences. I've used the RBI in the studio and lived it. I was able to get extreame bottom end while adding a gritty harmonic too end that I've only been able to achieve using guitar amps. I nearly purchased the VT 1000 after playing through one, and I was able to get that same characteristics as the RBI. I'm aware of the difference between the two, however, even with the dUg low end side soloed and the LPF disengaged, it still lacks the top end as opposed to your 1969 or VT 1000 amps, IMO. I currently running a separate head for my effected side, and blending them together but I'm really looking at the VT 1000 along with the dUg. I would essentially have a four amp setup running through two cabs. I absolutely love what you've done and up until I switched to Tech 21, I never thought I could get the tone I have without lugging around SVT''s and Marshall guitar amps. I'm a believer..

The bottom channel is full range when solo'd. You need to use the Mid Boost to get more high end. I think what you are hearing is that the tube emulation creates upper end harmonics that will not be present in a clean platform. What would be best unless you want to toggle between the channels is to set up the top channel clean or with very low drive to add additional top end harmonic content. This would be similar to using the presence control on the RBI. dUg obviously is going for that crunchy thing in the top channel but it doesn't have to be set that way.

Running a multi amp setup is great too.

What about engaging an outboard RBI or VT when using just the clean channel for added tube emulation? Or, would that end up like running a VT into another VT, as example.

I've tried a bunch of combinations and I'm pretty well setup with the dUg. As I stated, I'm running a second head with a mire traditional sound that also has all my effects going to it. Chorus, Envelope Filter, Synth and delay as well as a separate distortion with EQ boost. The dUg is set as a stand alone rig that's combined with the other. When playing my 12 string basses or even my 5 strings, I can add the top end of the dUg for a more aggressive tone, (which is most of the time). As I've said before, im Keanu g toward a full Tech 21 setup, replacing my other head with a VT 1000. Im also interested in the smaller new 500. However having the ability to blend two additional channels along with the dUg would be frickin amazing!!!

When running just the clean low end side of the dUg I have my other amp running as well. This gives me a great full tone. I just as well can use an additional
Tech 21 amp to replace my clean side. That will give me even more versatility all the way around!

That would work. The bottom channel is not a VT sound at all. It's a clean channel with EQ or compression.

Just remember the dUg Ultra was designed in collaboration with dUg. It's exactly the way he wanted and though I'm sure it shares some of the DNA of our SansAmp technology it's its own thing. One thing I've learned over the years is that there is not really a consensus when it comes to gear. Even two players that seem to go for the same types of tones may have very different approaches and gear requirements. In the end as long as you can make your gear do what you want it to do that's all that matters.

I'm guessing it's not going to be a preamp pedal, but more on the lines of an amp tweeker stompbox. The high and low pass filters of the dUg head would be a bit much but who knows! I would really like to see a preamp of the dUg with separate outputs for the gain and low end channels.

This is true. I'd be curious to see what's in the works! Just used my dUg on a session in Atlanta and Man it was amazing. The engineer was baffled at how good it sounded. Now they want to purchase one for the studio

If my hard rock band was still mostly playing hard rock I would have bought a dUg. I'm glad to hear that a preamp version might be on the way... if so, I'll be all over it!

Sweet!
I'd assume in the studio they were able to use both DI outputs and mix them at the board. Did you mic a cab as well?
Actually we used the mix out and no cab. I'm n this session I was using my MM Stingray 5 and the sound was amazing. On the next session we'll be digging deeper and overdubbing some 12 string bass over the top of some tracks. The dUg sounds like I'm playing out of cranked SVT's. I'm loving this rig!!
