dUg Ultra Bass 1000 - Tech 21

I use my dUg along side a VT 500 and combine the sound. The VT runs all
My effects while the dUg is running either single channel clean or both channels dirty. It's the most musical rig I've ever played through with so much variation in tone. I can go from scooped clean to bone crushing nasty with the touch of a button. My Hamer 12vers have never sounded this good!!

I'm running 2-10 Carvin BRX cabs. 600watts at 4ohms each and they sound killer! Any bass cab will produce the distortion side of this amp as it's not like running a true guitar head, which I used to do before getting this amp. I've plugged this head up to an Ampeg 8-10 and it was amazing. I would any good 4-10 cab will sound great. You just can't take it below 4ohms.

While it is on the pricy side, it's still less than running an SVT on one side and a Marshall on the other line I was doing! I run two rigs currently. A dUg on one side and the VT 500 on the other and blend those two together. It's the most versatile setup I've ever used. I can go from knarly 12 string to punchy Thunderbird with a push of the foot switch. And, I can push 8-10's or use smaller cabs in smaller rooms. The Tech 21 stuff is worth the money imo. I'm sure as time goes on you'll be able to find some deals. My dUg was open box for around $1,600.00. Worth every dollar..

I have an svt2 pro. How do they compare in feel as well as tone?

I've been an avid Ampeg SVT user for years. Primarily late 70's models. I've played through 2-4 & 6 pro's and I can say that this amp just sounds better. The high and low pass filter system just blows away what a normal tube amp can do, and at much lower volume! Most Ampeg user just won't admit it, and will stick to having to have all tubes to get this sound. I'll put my sound up against any SVT user and hurt their feelings. Don't get me wrong, I love SVT's, but to get what this head creates, you need a Marshall stack along side it.. so far, it's the best amp I've played through, but then again, I can't stand audiofile clean amps. Just not my thing.

IMO, both amps sound different, but I get the kind of things I like from each: chest pumping bass, nice grind, a little clank when I want it, and beautiful upper harmonic content. My bass sounds really good to start with, but the dUg just puts it waaaaaay over the top. I can't imagine an amp I'd be more happy with. I did a comparison one time, with andrew , between a MESA M9, GK 2001rb, and the dUg... The GK sounded OK. The MESA got me about 80-90% of the way to happiness, and I would have stopped there and bought an M9, but when we hit the dUg, everyone in the room went "WHOAH, THAT IS THE SOUND!" So, now I own a dUg. I have not looked back, even once.

I'd never say the dUg sounds like a tube Ampeg despite Tech 21 making some Ampeg emulating products. I own a 70's SVT and have owned the 2 Pro in the past. I'm a big fan of the tone you can get from an all tube Ampeg head, but the dUg sounds like no other amp I've ever heard. Which should be obvious given it's unique design. But as handofseven says, it hits all the right tone boxes in it's own rad way. It simply sounds fantastic.

Without exaggeration, at least every 2-3 weeks either handofseven or I will message the other (having just finished using the dUg in a band practice) just to gush about the dUg. It really is a special amp. It has the most dynamic combination of MASSIVE sounding, yet tight and defined low end, and then of course tons of clank and grind up top from the separate high channel.

I've owned and toured extensively with mid to late 70's model SVT's and always combined them with guitar amps to get my sound. The dUg amp to me, sounds like the split rigs I've ran my whole musical journey, but I can get that sound st a much lower volume if necessary! I'm sold on the Tech 21 gear. I run a VT 500 on one side with effects and the dUg on the other. I've never received so many compliments on my sound. The VT rig sounds amazing on its own, but the second you bring in the dUg rig my basses just come alive. I can literally use no cabs with IEM's to my bigger setup with 18's and 10's and just dominate if needed. You can't do that with old tube amps. My Hamer 12 strings and my Thunderbirds have never sounded this good..

for those of us that are still out of reach for the price of the head, there is progress on the pedal. apparently the prototype has been delivered to doug. that info and the pic was posted on the Yamaha Attitude facebook group.
