Dull Sound

Hello. I just bought a used Gallien Krueger 1001RB (Gallien-Krueger 1001RB-II 700/50W Biamp Bass Head | Musician's Friend) and a brand new Gallien Krueger Neo 410 ([Invalid or Expired Link Removed]) .
Power to groove ... Sounds great, right?
Problem is it all sounds DULL! Really, really dull. I got 700W of dullness!
Like if my strings were two years old and I've played 5 times a week. Does anyone know anything about this?

Maybe you should try to play something more interesting.

NO, no!!! I'm kidding!

First off, make sure that all the controls are set flat and use that as a starting point.
If you have spares, try other cables to make sure your connections are good.
Do you still have your old rig? Try the new cab with the old head and the new head with the old cab and see if the dullness follows one or the other to narrow it down.
If you can't narrow it down at home, did you buy it locally? Try bringing it back to the store and setting it up next to the floor model - do they sound the same? At that point, if you haven't gotten to the bottom of it, the store can get you a new one while you're there.

Were you expecting the GK "growl" that so many talk about? I have the 700rb and I've heard of people talking about the 1001 not being able to provide the growl because it takes a lot more for it to start hitting the rails...besides that, all of the above help is very useful

That's what I'm thinking...the amp is set up for biamping, but either the cables or the cabinet isn't, therefore the OP is only getting the stuff that's low passing and none of the stuff that's high passing. I'd also be checking the settings in the crossover control area...

The 1001 has a fixed 5khz crossover point for the little 50 watt tweeter amp, nothing to adjust. But "dull" is such a subjective term it could mean anything. A cable not inserted all the way, a miswired 4 conductor cable, a preshape button pushed, not noticing the tone knob was down on the bass, GK's eq going treble---->bass rather than the normal way and turning the wrong knob.....who knows what.

Last time I played a 1001 into a 6x10 it almost teared my head off my neck. Anything but dull and this was on a Squier.
Don't be afraid to use the Boost a lot it's an awesome feature. Like most amps, Gks like the gain to be pushed way hard.

Thank you all for your answers.
Furthermore ... Yes, I have the Speakon cable, maxed the Boost knob and played with the EQ. I still do not feel much difference, it has an opaque sound. Far from ANY growl. Not what I expected at all. I turn the tweeter all the way up but I feel no fifference.

I'm starting to question that since I bought the head on Ebay, maybe it's deffective. :(
