Dunlop strings?

Good, but just a little bit to much whizz.

Well quit whizzing on them!

I love Dunlop flats and use the same gauges, except I only use flats on 4-bangers. When you put them on, they're extremely bright and roundwound like, but that goes away soon enough and leaves you with awesome flatwound thump. Think LaBellas with a little less tension and a little more midrange.

Any of you Dunlop flat users ever had an issue with one of the strings continuing to slip on the tuner post?
The tuners are the newer tapered post Fenders (Pro and Elite). I always try to get at least 3 wraps on the tuner post, which can be difficult on the tapered post Fenders) but the G string kept slipping when it was almost tuned to pitch and it would strip off the black silk winding. It happened 3 times and each time I had to cut off the last 1/2 end of the string (without the silk winding) to get it to grip on the post). It finally stayed but only after it had been cut a few times that resulted in just 1 & 1/2 wrap on the post. Not sure that I’m comfortable that it will stay long term. Never had this problem with La Bella’s or Chromes (both have silk wraps).

Instead of doing that next time, do a lockwrap. I've had it happen many times with many different strings over the years, and it totally works. Just do your first wrap over the bend, then the rest of them under the bend.

I used Dunlop SS 60/120 on my SUB for 1/2 step down, drop D and B E A D tuning. Needed a slight truss rod adjustment for them. They were good for what I was playing at the time, had a nice heavy thump. I have changed back to D’Addario XL’s however.

Good news!
  1. I gigged with the new set of Dunlop flats and the G string with 1-1/2 wraps never budged.
  2. The Dunlop flats sounded and felt awesome. They really work with my Elite P-bass. I like the tone as much as the La Bella flats on my P-bass and the slightly less tension feels better to by fretting hand.
  3. Dunlop sent me an email and have shipped me a free set of Dunlop 45-105 flats.
I guess this time, when installing the G string, I use Jimmy’s locking suggestion and maybe go for a few more wraps (due to the smaller diameter and tapered tuner post).
