Dunwich Amplification General Discussion

And they're live! I won't be picking any of them up, and the merch is unfortunately way too expensive to ship over to Sweden for my liking.

On another note, I've sharpened my tracking of the used market, especially on Reverb seeing how that's the place most of them are sold. Some observations:
  • Dunwich has done like ten different HM-2 variants and they all have really clever and bad-ass names.
  • Gravity Well seems to pop up fairly frequently, or at least it has recently. I've got one on the way and I think it'll be a wonderful complement to my Rubber Neck :)
  • Witchfinders I thought would be a lot more common but I've only seen one that's currently available, unfortunately at a pretty high price and UK-only.
  • The more common stuff that Magic has also released (DA120, Volt Thrower, Fuzz Throne, Cthulhu Fuzz) do pop up quite frequently. Prices are usually more reasonable for those.
  • A Chrononaut popped up today and was sold before I even saw it. I figured there's gotta be a stoner-doom song called just that, but a quick glance on Spotify turned up negative. I am a bit surprised!
  • To me it feels like a kind of mythos, seeing pedal after pedal that I've never heard of pop up! It's certainly entertaining, but I wish there was a centralised documentation on Dunwich. It's one of very very few bands I will shill. To be honest I could probably learn a lot if I read the backlog of this thread... :)

I got into Dunwich a bit too late and have had similar observations. I'm actually pretty shocked at how fast anything sells once it is listed and that things sell at such crazy prices. The pedals are pretty phenomenal but it still surprises me

Oh absolutely same. I am so bummed out that I missed out on the Witchfinder/Doomfinder (and that was just last year!). I'd honestly pay a whole lot for the latter. Hearing the demo blew me away and now I can only dream of attaining that kind of massive tone. I can understand that the prices stay high -- they're, in my opinion, nothing short of unrivalled. So there's low to no supply, but nothing to quite compare. There's cool distortion pedals, but I've never heard one that emulates a power amp as well as the DA120, a RAT as powerful yet malleable as the Volt Thrower, or something so utterly massive and destructive as the Doomfinder.

I think Midnight Amplification is the one brand that has had a similar wow effect on me. I looked at them when I first sought a Green Matamp sound a couple of years back and their Holy Mountain is very well regarded. Unfortunately they're no longer active. This demo is really good:

He suggested he might in a post a while ago. Don't think there's any concrete plans though, the guy seems swamped in just keeping up with demand for the usual. See:

I'm not huge on the SVT sound even if Al really nails it on the modern releases, not to mention all his various filthy tones heard on the Om side of things. What you should keep in mind regarding Sleep's old stuff is that Al's tone wasn't actually all that dirty. Not to say it was clean, but it was in overdrive territory unlike the full on distortion or fuzz heard on his later material. I'm sure the DA120 can achieve something like it, but I wouldn't count on it being the most effective solution. I think the live version of Sonic Titan (on the Dopesmoker CD) is an excellent demonstration of his tone from then. It's very reminiscent of Geezer Butler's tone on the first few Sabbath albums.

Oh yeah that's a great recording. I think he would have been using Oranges at that time, though.

I am a little surprised that some of the "ubiquitous" (if a Dunwich pedal can be such a thing) bass pedals don't appear more frequently on the market. i.e. the Wizard Fuzz, the VT, and the ODB. I owned a Wizard, and it didn't quite work with my set up. I also had one of tje last Witchfinder's evert made. It was glorious, but I wasn't using it and I'm not a collector. I sold it (right before Dunwich shut things down, I coulda made a small fortune!) Hey, I've also parted with some Broughton unobtaniums as well, I've learned to make peace with it. Il lam currently using a Dunwich Bass Overdriver (most underrated Dunwich pedal ever). I doubt if I'll ever part with it (famous last words). I also have an Olde Dirty Bass. By far the most useful version of an OCD (sort of) ever created. Still, it sin't getting enough use. I am actually considering parting with my ODB. I know the market has settled a bit, but I have no idea what I would ask for it. When I sold my Witchfinder, I thought I was asking too much and it sold within two minutes of listing on reverb.

IF anyone is still reading this, I am not asking for a valuation, I'm just looking for someone to talk me out of selling. Or into it. I don't know. I'm just typing this whole thing as a form of therapy. Thank you for your time.

I must accept that there is no cure for GAS.

@YawningJorin - if you're looking for a versatile RAT, try out the Earthbound Audio Iron Pig. For my tastes, I preferred it to the Volt Thrower. I felt that the VT always had a slight bit of fizz to it, and I dislike fizz. The Iron Pig is tough to dial in, and can do all sorts of great tones. Either box is fantastic, though, and I'm probably splitting hairs.

That being said, I think I'm slowly realizing I'm not a RAT fan, as the Iron Pig is likely getting taken off the board now. Anyway, Dunwich is solid stuff, but for whatever reason, I just can't justify holding on to it. I think maybe I've just tried the Dunwich circuits that I don't like such as the RAT and OCD - I've never been able to make those work for me. Come to think of it, the only "standard" circuit that I use on bass is a Muff, all of my other stuff is original designs that aren't as popular or iconic. Is there a Dunwich Muff?

I'm also in awe of how much some of these pedals sell for. I simply can't justify it, though I'd love to try some out. If I have a pricey pedal I'm not using, it's gotta go to feed more GAS and other tones.
