Dunwich Amplification General Discussion

Had a sit down with the Parabellum just now! I'm liking it. Trying to use it as a dirt box seems a bit fruitless, there's a fizz in the high end particularly noticeable with the lowest strings and it doesn't do much with the lowest frequencies for distorting. But that wasn't exactly what it was sold as anyway. The output is massive and the tone shaping seems really versatile. The noise is virtually zero even at higher gain settings. The gentle saturation is a very welcome device. I need to try driving my Burning Sunn with it to really see if I can make it shine the way I hope it will. Or maybe I should move it back in the chain and put it just after compression and work it as more of a clean pre-amp :)

middle setting is the most touch sensitive with loudest volume, but only by a hair. Toggle to the right is really raw and sizzly and kind of compressed sounding...it's what I think of when I think of Germanium (but I have no idea) and the left side is less raw, but not as clean and touch sensitive as the center. Center and left are closer in sound than right and left.

I did a bunch of side-by-side comparing and you can dial them in to sound pretty similar...assuming you have the same clipping option selected. Based on tests with my ears, I think the little guy has LED Low Gain, no Diodes...and maybe Shottky (although it actually sounds like 2 settings are on Diodes).

Anyone able to look at the circuit and tell me? @dunwichamps ? @johnk_10 ?

I compared the pictures posted and information posted and I'm thinking the 2 green and one little clear LEDs in D6, D7, and D7 are for the LED Low Gain...D1, D2, D3, D4 look like 2 silicon and 2 germanium, but none of the voicings sound as raw as the silicon settings on the bigger box Volt Thrower.

Any thoughts? Here's some pics

I've actually taken my edison out of the chain altogether now and am mostlyish happier with it. I'll likely use it again at some point, but seem to have fallen back in love with my phat phuk B. Also, I really don't like the design cosmetics of the edison, like at all: funky shape, knob on side, too much pretty lights.

It's an interesting feature, expanding Edison's ground. Quite like having some edgier options after my (Parabellum) overdrive. Using my Locust Star in no diodes position for this task, but this V2 may do the trick as well !

Speaking of the mighty Parabellum, was looking for a box to ship a pedal, and found Parabellum's one. Inside, there was Seth's letter. Was so excited to hear the pedal that i didn't even notice this letter, and its interesting parts.

Well. I gotta suggest cracking that case if you got one. For me, turning that bias control all the way counter clockwise was a worthwhile improvement. Turning it fully clockwise seemed to emphasize characteristics that I didn’t like. Clockwise gets more sputtery and feels like the headroom goes away, which I might dig more on guitar, or for a stylized bass sound. Going CCW gets a cleaner sound, but there’s still plenty of gain to get nasty.

Curious to see what others find.
