Haven't played one yet, but I've been watching them. Of all of the "big" builders that are doing them, I'd likely come closer to getting an ESP, they actually have the same scale.

Closing out the dock season with The Clint Keeton Band at Caney Creek Grill in Kingston this Friday night.
Hillbilly Jedi at Wild Boar Tavern in Powell immediately after the Vols play WV Saturday night.
Headlining the Hooray For Harriman Festival on Monday with Hillbilly Jedi in (where else) downtown Harriman.

My band Kategory Five is still struggling to get shows. Jeff’s 14 bands seem to get em all ;-D. Kidding aside, Jeff and Clint are doing what they can to help us get shows. So far, everyone who books us wants or has asked us back. So, hopefully things will change soon. If anyone can toss us a bone or knows of a private party or wedding... message me info and I will call, email, whatever. Thanks!

Accurmi, welcome. The thread was started to put all of us living and playing in east TN together, but it certainly can include anyone who lives anywhere in the world who is from east TN!

Congrats on staying busy, Jeff! You are probably the most gigging of our ETTB clan.
I think it's awesome when I play four theatre shows in a year.. I love it, but I am not playing nearly enough.
Let's talk up going to see CKB and HJ at these gigs.. who's on?
I am still envious, because you have a band, even if you guys aren't getting enough gigs for what you want.
I have not been in a stable band since I moved to Knoxville. A long time. I know a lot of musicians from my theatre gigs, but they are not in bands for the most part.
This is not the best era for local bands, for sure, but there is still a market, albeit limited.
I think for Accurmi's (and others'!) benefit, we should post our first names so we know each other by name. I was sitting here posting just now (several times!) and realized that I either don't know a lot of you by first name or have forgotten what it was. Jeff Roller and myself are obvious!

Last post for this sitting I picked up a copy of Ariana Cap's Music Theory for the Bass Player and am looking forward to working through the book. The book was well recommended and I can always use a refresh on theory and technique. It looks good so far.
I also have been in touch with @edfriedland and am going to work again through his two walking bass lines books. He's such a great player and has been an excellent educator for years. An inspiration to me and many others!
Some time back in Bass Player magazine, of which I have all copies up until I ended my subscription around 2010, I read a piece in which the player said: use the downtime between gigs when you're not preparing specifically for the next gig to improve your skills. Take lessons, work through methods, get better at what you love doing. It might have even been in Ed's column, which he wrote for years for BPM. It's great advice from any teaching bass player.

Didn't seem like I was as busy this year as in years past. 49 shows so far this year and counting, but it was really unusual to be working with two different bands this summer. I'm thankful I was able to juggle that and get subs where needed. I doubt I'll be able to keep that pace next year, the market (venues) continues to shrink, and there is no shortage of bands wanting to play for the dwindling supply.
I'm also seeing a rise in "blues jam" events, or in other words, "free" shows pop up all over. While I can get behind weeknight events that support live music and foster networking among local musicians, there are some venues that are taking advantage of the situation, and I foresee that only spreading. Unless it's a true benefit show in support of a worthy cause, I hate to see any musician donate their time and talent for nothing.
That being said, maybe I'm missing something. I need to throw a "roof jam" at my rental house. It could showcase local roofers? I'd like to organize a weekly "yard jam" to showcase the talents of area mowers, weedeaters, landscape artists etc......

It would be great to see some fellow ETTB'rs! It's been a long time since our last GTG. If anyone is thinking of coming out, Friday gig looks iffy due to it being outside, 50% chance of thunderstorms.
Saturday at Wild Boar is going to be a circus, I think there is a Powell HS reunion going on there at the same time. Anyone who hasn't been there, it's the old Spicy's location. New owners have dropped a ton of money there, it's probably one of the best stages I've been on locally.

I have been in Bangkok for a year now and am on a two year contract. But I will likely extend it as I am quite happy here
I've found the life of an international teacher to be far better than what I would have in the States haha. Unfortunately, I am not playing live here. I was living in Indonesia for four years prior to this and only played sporadically, so I am really heavily getting back into playing again, as I've missed it so. I found a bass teacher who is forcing me to relearn some things, which has been good, but so far no drummers involved. Perhaps he knows someone who can help me...
I upgraded to a brand new Fender American Pro Jazz Bass in April and am absolutely in love. It's my most prized possession by far! Now I'm working towards emulating some of my favorites: Flea, Les Claypool, Stanley Clarke, Bootsy... the standard favorites, I suppose
I come home every Christmas to visit my family. Mom would kill me if I wasn't home for the holidays haha.
Anyway, I'd love to hear more about you ET bassists!

We'll cap off the summer season with the Cookeville Fall Fun Fest on Sep 8, where we're on the bill with the Fabulous Thunderbirds. Right after that we'll start preproduction work for our third self released disc as well as a bunch of singles we have been putting off recording. Between the recording, and the few gigs we have booked, we'll be busy through the end of the year.
Anyway, has anyone been thinking about a GTG before the end of the year?

There’s a lot of established acts that get most of the shows. It’s very hard for a new band (even if the members have over 100 years combined on stage entertaining the masses) to squeeze in the doors. We even have an attractive, charismatic, award winning (sorry Ms Lambert) female vocalist that will drop your jaw with her abilities.
Absolutely agree Jeff!!! Those that play for free send the message that their skill has zero value. That angers me beyond words... anger toward the musicians and the venues!
