Easter Service Set Up

Here's a little action shot. We played 4 songs per service, and I played 7 services over the course of the weekend. I used my Sire v7 5 through an Avalon pre to the house. We use Avioms for the IEM's and I also play through an Ampeg SVT Pro 7 into an Eden 410XLT cab. It's not cranked but enough to move a little air on stage. Cool little trivia fact for @Dr. Cheese and anyone else who may care but my buddy next to me on the guitar MDing is Israel Houghtons 1st call guitar player. So if anyone has heard Israel and New Breed 'Alive In Asia' he's on there. We did a 'less complex' version of an Israel song this weekend but did manage to sneak some cool runs in there. I'm constantly joking with him how painful it must be for him to work with me after spending time with Justin Raines rocking the bass!! :D
He's a cool dude and we had a fun weekend.

Man you guys must just rip. Anyone who can play up to Israel Houghtons standards is way out of my league. I wish I could play more in that style, but I'm just a hack trying his best to serve.....

While we definitely have some talented members we definitely don't hit Israel Houghtons standards either! We try to keep it simple and make it work. And that's what we're all in it for.....to serve and do our part. Keep it up the good work @cableguy.

It's great seeing everyone's set-up & Easter set. We had 3 great services today, although rehearsal at 6AM was a bit tough. It's a good thing I'm not a night owl anymore. Seeing you guys and your fivers make me realize how much I miss my old one for worship. Between my d-tuner and last minute key changes it makes me think to much sometimes......:D

You can get a decent five cheap. I have a hard enough time with notes in standard tuning!:smug:

You almost need a 5-string to play anything by Chris Tomlin, and he has around 200 songs currently being played world-wide. ITunes has only 100 for sale as that is it's limit for any artist. Many of his songs are written so a 5-string will work without any drop tuning. Maybe he's a former bass player?

From my experience, his studio stuff is recorded in whatever key fits the best with his voice, and to my ears most of the bass parts are played on a 4 string (sounds like a P Bass, E is the lowest note, etc.). Some live versions are slightly lower, though with him, less so than with others. Most published versions are 3 or 4 half steps down in key if it's for a male voice. I guess if you are playing a published chart keyed a little lower and want to keep the exact bass line transposed down you may need a 5 string... But I like to keep a similar tone on the song and still play a 4. It sounds more rock that way.

Well my Easter setup was far less impressive, but I had to make adjustments for playing at the beach. Took my Fender Mustang bass through an Ibanez Promethean amp with a direct out to the PA. I was not too comfortable with bringing my 6er and exposing it to the salty air...although my buddy brought his 70k 18th century violin, guess my faith needs some increase in that regard! ;)

Timmy-Watts: Possibly it's my BL, not Chris. He's a 'semi-retired' Nashville entertainer who played bass many many years and has access to several online chart companies. He is always bringing charts in keys I've never played before so it's a lot of learning (or re-learning). As he ages his voice has dropped some so maybe he's picking charts to reflect his new vocal range, not Chris' vocal range. (Keys of B, C, D and Eflat are used a lot) Several of the bass charts are those he has written. Whatever, many call for a 5-string to play as written. No matter - we play the songs and the message gets out.
