I would rather eat with good company than eat alone. However, I would much prefer eating alone than to have to sit through a meal with bad company. I don't care how good the food is, if I ain't diggin' the company I'm with, my meal is ruined.
I don't really care if people think I'm a loner, especially strangers.
It's funny how I just saw this thread now, because I just ate alone during my lunch break (now). We have a cafeteria at work where I eat almost every day (going out to eat means I need to rush and eat too quickly since everything is far from my office). But an observation I made is that so many people at work would rather sit with anybody just to avoid being seen eating alone. The last thing I want to do during my break at work is to have to force out uncomfortable chit-chat with someone that I don't vibe well with. Or worse yet, have to endure a whole hour of talking about work or listening to people complain or gossip.
I admit I can be a bit of a loner and need my space from time to time to regroup, but I'm not necessarily anti-social either. But I guess I am picky with who I associate with on my own time.
