eating alone in public

I was actually thinking of the post the other day. I might be going back home to San Diego soon for a visit but a lot of my friends will still be working. This however, may be the only opportunity I get to eat at the several restaurants that I love back home so if I do go back home, I very well may be eating alone. Oh well, at least I will be eating some delicious food that I have not been able to eat in years!

Nobody's answered my question as to why I should feel weird about it, but...

Many years ago I had a job at a big audio-design place in NYC and every day at noon, I'd bag my grub and go lock myself inside their huge anechoic chamber with my lunch and a book.

That's about as alone as you can be inside earth's atmosphere.

I do it all the time. I usually won't hit up a real fancy place by myself, because I like to enjoy that with others. Eating alone doesn't bother me. When I have to eat, I have to eat.
This is what I was going to say. I'll do fast food alone, as well as mid-priced sitdown joints--I just make sure I bring along something to read, and I'm fine. (It did bother me somewhat when I was younger.) But I save the higher-end places for going out with others.

I go to college. I eat alone or with one person all the time. It isn't about a lack of friends or anything like that, but merely me trying to fit a meal into 15 or 20 minutes. Most days this is breakfast on the run or lunch if I have to be a responsible adult and do something else instead of have a sitdown meal.

If it was a sit down restaurant where I am being served, then yes I would feel odd doing that. Fast food or something like that, completely different story. There might be a rare occasion where I would eat alone at a sit down restaurant such as if I was out of town or something but that may be the only reason why I would.

This, pretty much, but I've never really thought about it.
If I'm at school and go to a fast food place then I sometimes eat alone. I guess it's not the most ideal situation, but it's also quieter.
But if it comes to a sit down and be served restaurant, well...I guess I wouldn't ever really go to one unless I was with somebody.

Hmmmm -- interesting take.

I remember a situation a couple of years ago where I was traveling on business and had a connecting flight through Chicago O'Hare that was cancelled and the next one wasn't for 4 hours.

Since it was dinnertime and I had absolutely nothing to do, I bought a book and then I went to the restaurant in the O'Hare Hilton (which is connected to the Airport.) It's call The Gaslight Club and it's a classic, "Old School Steakhouse."

I had a fantastic meal (that my expense account paid for), I killed several hours, and I felt like the king of the world! Maybe I looked "weird" to others but I enjoyed myself so much, I didn't care!

(In all seriousness, it is very, very common to see business travelers eating alone. It's really no big deal.)

I am not really a self conscious person, and I am sort of a loner anyway, but I don't like eating alone in public.

Having said that, I prefer eating alone (in private or pseudo-private) whenever possible. Natural as it may be, eating is a gross activity, and most people don't seem to know how to limit the grossness (even women). I can quickly loose my urge to fill my belly if I see someone chewing their bolus (technical term for chewed lump of food), or even eating something distasteful to me.

Usually I just eat in my car.

Years ago, on my honeymoon (the only fun the ex and I ever had- ahem), we were on a cruise and saw some poor guy eating by himself every night.

I have no idea what his story was, maybe the ball and chain was back at the room, maybe he was a critic/secret crusier, or whatever....

At any rate, it made me really, really, sad for him. I don't want to be that guy....

Years ago, after a live-in girlfriend cheated on me, I found myself eating alone at "Sparky's Subs." The whole theme of the restaurant was about firefighters who have died.

1) eating alone for the first time in years
2) surrounded by memos of nothing but death

Talk about depressing, I left the place in tears. I will never eat alone again, I will never go to Sparky's again.

Life is better now, as a full-time single dad, my son and I love going out to eat... breakfast, dinner, cheap or expensive.

I can understand that point of view as well, Dwayne. Out on the road and stuck for a little while, why not treat yourself (especially if it's on the company tab)? I only travel for work a few times a year, so I very rarely have a few hours to kill. Also, our budgets allow for pretty decent meals, but anything over 25 bucks or so will get questioned.

I actually look forward to sitting down with a good book and a good meal. Such is a sales reps life.

Yes. I did outside sales for 12+ years and one of the things I looked forward to being able to do once in a while was to go to a restaurant, shut off my phone for an hour, read the paper, and eat while interacting with no one but the waitstaff.

And on Fridays when there was a major golf tournament on, I absolute loved to knock off early and go to a restaurant with a bar that had TV's showing the Masters, U.S. Open, etc and eat and drink beer for a few hours by myself with no one to bother me but the bartender and some other patrons doing the same thing I was. Ahh... those were good days. I miss them.

P.S. My expense account paid for those good times too. Anyone have a time machine I can borrow?
