eating alone in public

If it's out of a failed attempt to not eat alone, then yes I'll probably hate it.

Otherwise, I'm perfectly fine with it. A good book or a nice scenery to look at will be perfect companions.

To those that don't like it:

Do you dislike it because of how you feel, or how you feel you'll be perceived by others?

Is there really a difference between eating alone in the privacy of your home and eating alone in the view of your potential peers?

Me, I eat alone daily as a result of my job. Doesn't bother me, but I typically eat alone at locations that our cultures approves for doing so: fast food, cafes, etc.

I've been alone for years. Eating alone in public? Fact is just today I ate in a restaurant for the first time in about 6 months. (I very seldom dine out). And of course I was alone.

Did it bother me? Should it have? Seriously, I never gave it a thought.
i find that the wait staff usually tries to cram you into as small a space as possible if alone.....since i like to spread out the paper, and enjoy the meal alone i try to avoid the busier times.....alone time outside of home is hard to find these days, and the ability to be alone without being lonely is great.....every minute of every day does not need to be filled with gab...

I do it all the time. I usually won't hit up a real fancy place by myself, because I like to enjoy that with others. Eating alone doesn't bother me. When I have to eat, I have to eat.

For some reason, I think we had a similar thread to this in the past year. Hmm...

I find I rarely end up "alone" anyhow though. The last time I went out by myself (a few days ago), I ended up sharing my table with 6 people, two of whom I knew. I still would've offered to share even I didn't know any of 'em though. The place was packed and I'd always share in that circumstance.

Yep, but it's probably buried at least 25 pages deep in OT at this point. ;)

Doesn't bother me in the slightest. That being said though, if I am dining alone in public I want to be LEFT alone. I can't stand it when people bother me in the middle of a meal.

+1.
Leave me alone when I'm eating!

When I am at a restaurant, why should I care what people think if they see me eating alone? I'm already eccentric enough as it is, people are going to think what they want, but it has absolutely no effect on my life, so why should I care?

Same with the rest of you. What does it matter what anyone thinks of you? You probably won't even know what they are thinking, let alone will it have any opportunity to change any aspect of your life.

Ever ridden an Amtrak long-distance train? If you are alone, they will seat you at a table with fellow passengers. They don't leave empty places at the tables, so don't feel bad about being alone at meal time on the train: you won't be along for long.

And yes, fast-food alone. Save the bigger tabs for when the wife is with me. No problem, gotta eat.
