eBay links.....?

I think David pretty much covered everything - I want to clarify one thing though - beyond the bass-specific ads that we sell directly (Perfect Bass, SWR, G&L, etc etc), everything else is Google Adsense. I'm not running any deals with Ebay. Ebay pays Google to advertise on the Google Adsense Network. TalkBass, like 90% of other sites out there, uses Google Adsense to fill unsold ad inventory.

So Google is paying for that ad space and the eBay ads are running as a somewhat indirect (they are making the links pretty specific) result of that. Am I understanding this correctly?
This still wouldn't change the resulting issue.

As a curiousity: could you, Paul, block eBay's portion of this Google Adsense if you so chose?

Yes It does - that's why I said you were misunderstanding!

So - you appeared annoyed that these ads were showing up - but if people are using ad blockers on their browsers then they never need see these ads and so the person you objected to was suggesting that if you did this as well - then you need not be annoyed by them!

Bruce, just to try and clarify - he's NOT objecting to seeing them himself at all and therefore the stuff about being able to block them was not in any way relevant to his point.

He's talking about the fact that they can be seen by anyone else who doesn't happen to be using ad blocking, thereby giving the auctions referred to in the ads visibility advantages on TalkBass over our members' own ebay auctions. In other words, a supporting TB member can't link from TB to an ebay auction they're running themselves(in the first week), but a non-TBer who drops lucky can have their auction plugged here at any time through Google AdSense. You see? I hope that sorts out the misunderstanding. :)

I understood what PB meant, but I also think David explained the policy fully and like him I think it's generally a pretty fair one overall.

So he was actually saying that seeing an ad - I quote - "would really p*ss me off" - so I think it is entirely relevant then to say - well just block all ads and then you won't be "p*ssed off" !!

I'm surprised that you are standing up for somebody who has shown such a hostile attutude to people who are just trying to help..:confused:

Joking aside - I'll try to explain again as it seems you still don't understand the main point he was making. Read the post you quoted and you should be able to grasp that he's NOT saying that seeing the ads HIMSELF would "p*ss him off". You seem to think he is, but he isn't. He's saying that it would p*ss him off if OTHER PEOPLE saw such links on his own for sale thread, as it might lose him a potential sale. Do you follow now? I don't think it's that hard to get myself, but I'm not sure... it seems be a bit of a sticking point (forgive the pun). Try reading it all through again. I really have tried to be as clear as I can and I don't think I can say it any plainer for you.

As for him being "hostile"; well, I was just giving him the benefit of the doubt, which is a good thing to do generally, I think. I can certainly understand, having read the thread, him being frustrated that people have missed his point by either not reading carefully or just not taking the trouble to understand what he was saying. But I do agree that some calmer responses on his own part might have helped him make his point a little more clearly. I suppose we all respond hastily without engaging our brains properly from time to time, yes?

Because he understands my point perfectly and can probably understand why I've fired back at ridiculous, condesending, smart a$$ "answers" from some that don't get it, apparently like you, Bruce (although your answers aren't the ones I'm refering to).

Well you read it your way - I'm really not that bothered - I know what I read - what I saw was somebody who was hostile and being p*ssed off and then expected to get reasonable answers - not good form... IMO of course...:hmm:

Once again, you don't get it.
I was not getting reasonable answers. I was getting smart a$$ed answers from people who weren't even comprehending the question. That's irritating.

Bassybill did not read it his way. He read it the correct way. Something that some others could have done had they not been so busy trying to make fun. :rollno:

You did not (read it the correct way). Had you done so you might have understood the irritation at the smart a$$ed "answers" I was getting.

PS. FWIW, the "Pizza Hut" comment was a joke. I hope you at least read that correctly.

They weren't "reasonable answers". They were smart a$$ed retorts to a question they were apparently incapable of understanding correctly. You saw no agression from me to the few that actually understood the question and actually gave "reasonable answers", whether they agreed with my point of view or not.

It was the "smart a$$es" that weren't helping that raised my temper.

FWIW......apparently you don't know what you read.......because you read it wrong. As proven by several who did not (and since I'm the author, I should know).
