I've had the opposite of this happen. Many years ago, a buyer won an auction (a $30 poster) and immediately began requesting positive feedback. I declined and said that, when I receive payment, I'll be glad to leave feedback. He sent me a rather angry reply telling me he had run a brick and mortar store for x number of years and had bought and sold guitars worth thousands of dollars that I couldn't afford to buy if I was selling a poster for $30.

I looked at his feedback and it was all positive - and all received over the last week or so as a buyer of low value items. I reacted to another of his demands for positive feedback by reporting it to eBay. They said something was going on but told me nothing else. A few days later the guys profile was suspended and some days later deleted.

I've always felt he trying to pump up his feedback score and percentage in order to put up an items (or items) and then rip people off. I'm glad I fall for his crap.

Answer to either scenario is a big "So What" .

eBay don't cancel your '30 days Money back guarantee' just because you've left feedback.

Perhaps I should have expanded. What if the buyer did leave positive feedback as per request, and the item has an undisclosed fault? Refunds aren't the issue; rather, leaving feedback before reviewing your purchase is.

Since eBay hold funds until the goods are received by the buyer how do you see this 'scam' working ?

I usually receive funds for items sold on eBay 36-48 hours after shipping them (creating the label through eBay), not when they were delivered.

I would agree that everyone at one point has zero feedback. That alone shouldn't be a negative if all else seems fine. But I would not leave feedback until the item I bought and paid for arrived. Would anyone leave a restaurant review before they were served and eaten their meal?

Yep, we all have to start at the beginning with Ø feedback.

And we get positive feedback by completing transactions fairly and promptly. When the goods arrive and are as advertised, then I give feedback, which is by the way, intended not for my benefit but to advise future buyers/sellers.

I have a dispute going right now, bought a recording pre on 1-15-25, I tried to cancel on 1-30-25 as item was still reported "not shipped" at Ebay - seller declined to cancel same day claiming "already shipped", then same day contacts to say parts are missing, do I want a discount - again, AFTER declining refund because item allegedly shipped.

Item still not reported shipped, much less received.

Refund is due tomorrow - imagine the review I'm going to write this scammer for using my money for two weeks - cheaper than a Payday Loan - that's how the fraud works.

Also, not the first time, IME I've seen this. Watch out for "f*****wolf-0" (not complete name for the complete scambagger).

A reader looking for honest reviews can't always tell who is in on the scam - because shilling is a scam, and so they do count as dishonest; if a restaurant needs shills I certainly don't need the restaurant.

Of course but if a place is that bad there will be plenty of other reviews that will say so. At least that's been my experience. Shills won't overcome that.

I know eBay recently changed their rules to allow sellers quicker access to funds but goods still need to have been received or at least evidence of shipping provided.

Seller never shipped so doesn't have your money, but eBay does, so you might want to re-think how the fraud works

I just received the refund; it was an under $200 deal, but I'm sure a payday loan would have charged at least $75.00 here in IL.

Even if the thief didn't have actual possession of the funds, they were remitted at his instance and through his fraudulent conduct - and so there are colorable consequential damages, whether he had the money or not.

Those damages would be my loss of the use of the money, which could be re collateral or another purchase or a business deal (loss could possibly have been greater!), and $75 would be a good measure of damages based on the above.
