Quick question. As I played the beast, my upper fretting palm up to my finger tips became pretty slick. Would this be due to the oiled neck? Could it have been from the neck not being completely "finished"? When I play at home I always start with pretty clean hands.

Maybe you're just not used to the feel of EBMM "unfinished" necks. Maybe some neck cleaning is in order? Did it sit in the store and was played by others?

Birchwood Casey Tru Oil is what they use in the factory, just one quick wipe on and wipe off technique, along with Birchwood Casey Gunstock Wax. Tru Oil is actually a varnish, that will harden if left on the neck. The way EBMM put it on however leaves the neck pretty bare, as they don't leave Tru Oil to harden, they wipe it off almost immediately. I've added 8 coats (1 per day) on my Stingray to add more protection and more of a lacquered feel to it (and it won't get dirty looking!). Tru Oil is very easy to work with and is a popular finish. However, plenty people much prefer the "bare" necks that you get on Stingrays.

Thanks mouthmw. It's a new bass, unplayed; it came bagged inside the case. I did buy it unseen and unplayed, I liked the look and read about the sound here and decided to get one. I like the way it feels and sounds, and like you stated, I may just need to get used to the EBMM neck. : )

Here is my Special5. Started out as a white body, mint pick guard, chrome hardware but didn't stay that way long. Black Ice pick guard, black knobs, black screws, & black toggle cap. He's 9.2 pounds and named "Rex" after the stormtrooper. Love this thing.

So I put a set of Cobalt flats on my 5HH. Tames the treble nicely. Doing my first recording tomorrow with them so I’ll see how they sit with the other instruments. Anybody else use these as their main strings on a 5HH?

First time I’ve ever played a set with it and didn’t have the treble cut at least a 3rd with these flats. Great sound. I’ve had them on my P bass for 9 months, but they sound just as good on the Ray.

went with the black. I also ordered a clear one but will likely put that on my incoming maroon mist one coming in

I purchased my dropped copper 4HH back in early November. I couldn't be happier with this purchase. Best bass I've ever played. I can't get enough of the roasted maple neck. Due to this COVID-19 thing, my place of employment locked all the control room operators in at work to "protect them". I brought only the essentials... the EBMM SR4 Special, my '52 reissue Tele, pedalboard and headphones. They could keep me in here months and it really wouldn't be that bad....

I‘d say the general consensus is that these are both finishes you can have on a Stingray Special.

I have one in dropped copper and honestly I can't tell a huge difference from the pictures. I'm sure it is much more dramatic in person. I think they both look awesome.

I was thinking about getting a black pick guard for mine. I wonder how it would look with the dropped copper...
