EBMM StingRay Special Club

This is just me, but I was never totally happy with the pre-Special StingRay because of its very "zingy" tone. (I know many people love it.) Especially with 3-band models, I just found the tone harsh and not that versatile, particularly given that I'm not a slapper.
I agree with this...but I bought a pre-Special 3EQ because I LOVE the zingy tone. To me, that is the Stingray sound. I bought a Special and it had a smoother sound. For me, I had a bunch of Fenders and a Bongo and Sabre that cover the "smooth" territory...I wanted that aggressive sound.

So, for the long time EBMM Stingray HH players. I know the weight was a big factor and then the preamp upgrade on the Specials have been mostly what I hear about. I am thinking about picking up a used pre-2018 HH as a backup. Other than weight and possibly having to learn the different EQ slopes will I be disappointed?
My pre-Special StingRays get more gigging time than my Specials. Their aggressive tone comes through in the mix better than the Specials. Well worth the weight burden for me. YMMV.

Too many people worry about the weight of these Stingrays but I sit when I play so an extra pound or two doesn't matter to me. My 4H Special is nearly 2 lbs lighter than my 4HH Special but actually the extra weight of the 4HH I think really helps it's tone, it just rings like a Steinway Grand piano with so much harmonic rich glory the angels in heaven look down in approval. I'm thinking perhaps that in a lighter bass the notes get absorbed quicker into the wood but I'm sure the ebony fretboard has something to do with it also. I'll put this bit on the heavy side 4HH Tectonic Blue Sparkle with ebony board up against any pre Special. I actually had a 86' black with maple neck 2 band Ray back in the day.

Does anybody have any inside info on when the new finishes are going to be released? I emailed ebmm at the beginning of the year and got a response saying to keep my eyes peeled so I figured there would be an announcement at NAMM, but unfortunately no. I know they are pushing the Darkrays, and I am kicking myself for missing on the white sparkle 4 string. I'm looking to pull the trigger on one soon but I was hoping to see a new batch of color ways come out first.

I emailed them about 3 weeks ago asking the same question. I was told next Spring.

I've been looking at those for a while now, love that finish with the matching headstock. Looks really good with that roasted maple neck too.
I almost bought one of those before I found my Aqua Sparkle on Reverb.

The orange does go really well with the roasted maple
I was also going to get one and when it came time to, I was told it would be 3 month's for them to make one for me. Me being impatient and being able to pick up a Smoked Chrome right there and then, I think you know what happened next. :smug:

No regrets, I love the Smoked Chrome. :bassist:

I just saw that smoked chrome finish in person recently and it looked great.

I probably would never have gotten the Aqua Sparkle if I hadn't seen it in person first. It's really hard to photograph some finishes

Yes it is hard to photograph sparkle finishes. This one came out pretty good from Friday night and it sounded awesome through the Orange rig.

BTW the one on the side is HD Yellow, but with the lights it is looking kinda pink.

When the first run of Special came out I wanted the HD yellow!
The HD Yellow looks so cool with the roasted neck and black hardware, it's actually the first Special HH that I got. It kind of changes color though with the lights. After a short time of owning it I started saving up for the Harvest Orange or Smoked Chrome. I would still love a Harvest Orange, but I honestly don't think it is going to happen anymore. Never say never though.

I was waiting for three years to found an Aqua Sparkle. Finally got one on Reverb!
BTW, the person responsible for last set of colours should be fired.

Yep, for the most part they were pretty undesirable. It wasn't a person though, it was a monkey. EBMM wanted to try an experiment and at the same time cut back on the payroll so with some positive reinforcement at the cost of just a few bananas cleverly got a monkey to select out different color combinations. Though there have been quite a few customer complaints about the latest set of the colors, one or two of the paint schemes were surprisingly good. The monkey has since been retired to the local zoo where it occasionally does people caricature drawings for visitor entertainment. Next Spring when the new colors are introduced let's hope they at least come from a budding art student at the local community college.
