This is what I meant by that statement.

To my ears, with the revoiced preamp and the neodymium pickups, the Specials are already voiced closer to the old 2 band StingRays than the pre Special 3 band models. It lacks that metallic ping that I did not like, especially on the ceramic pickup models.

When I speak of vintage 2band tone , I’m hearing Get on The Floor, Lady In My Life, Ain’t We Funkin Now, Stomp, Le Freak, Good Times, I’m Coming Out, We Are Family, Greatest Dancer, Do I Do, Super Freak, I Need Your Lovin, Square Biz, Another One Bites The Dust, Paradise, Hang on To Your Love, ect. It’s that smooth with just the right amount of bounce to the notes StingRay signature sound that I love so much. TI Flats and Ernie Ball Slinky Cobalt Flats and the right EQ for the song gets me there. Sometimes it takes a certain right and technique as well.

The hollow saddles are not threaded at the top end, so the screw travel stops there.

The bridge is junk.
It's what happens when weight-saving overrides common sense durability and adjustability.
EBMM had sent me 2 sets of new saddles and neither fixed the issue. Then they suggested using clear nail polish on the threads… on a new bridge!
It's full of nail polish now!
I really like the bass but the bridge is… ass - not even worth a 4-letter word.

Would save you the frustration and disappointment of trying to make the bridge exceed the limits of what it was designed to do...

Going to keep my eye on this. Thought I was lucky to have found the last BT13 in Canada a few days ago. Just had it delivered. And, to my dismay, it was a mislabelled BT12 (Fender) key. D'oh!

Yep, nail polish.
FWIW, I'm not trying to "exceed the limits of what it was designed to do." I'm just trying to make it hold adjustment as it should.

Well, customer service @ Frank's Music Centre is apparently stellar: Mark is buddies with the guy who runs Hipshot, so we'll see if they can pull some strings and get me one when they're piping hot... or at least at the same time as everyone else.

Not to pile on but my experience is similar, just in the opposite direction. A few of mine are just about decked to the bridge and that hollow saddle design does not play well with the threaded screws. I am a candidate for a shim as well it seems but it's set up to my liking enough to not fuss with that yet. I just can't go any lower on some strings and I think there is not enough screw making contact that it they may very well just work their way loose.

On another note of things I found annoying are the tuner pegs. Unless the string length is precisely cut that last portion of the last bit of string wrap has no where further downward to travel to and begins this half wedge and half over wrap, with enough downward force that it impacts the actual free function of the key/peg easily turning. And I am not talking about excess wraps, pretty much what I have done on any bass I have ever owned. It's an odd taper as these pics show. It's really hard to hold the 2-3 winds together into a nice even wrap, they want to push down too far.

The tuner-post issue is easily resolved. Simply unwind the tuner a little to slacken the string slightly and coax the wrap upward. I’ve used a screwdriver for this. Then re-tighten the string. Just needs to be done on the heavier strings when changing. I find little if any difference with the tapered-post challenge between the Special and pre-special StingRays.

I haven’t had a problem with the Special’s hollow saddles. But I think, how much weight does that really save?

The tuner-post issue is easily resolved. Simply unwind the tuner a little to slacken the string slightly and coax the wrap upward. I’ve used a screwdriver for this. Then re-tighten the string.

This is exactly how I have done it on every bass and guitar I have ever owned over the last 40+ years so I am fully familiar with the technique. And where I went on this one, which is when I discovered the struggle unlike any others. And once I needed to have to add a screwdriver against soft wood and metal I backed off. It just does not respond the same way to doing that as it just wants to push the string downward. Perhaps in time as the pegs wear in a bit they may hold differently but I am thinking I'll not get that far with this one.

So I just returned my Stingray Special 5 HH. The reason is because it’s a HH. This was my second HH and I felt like I forced myself to like position 2-5. I would find a EQ that I liked but the next time I plugged in using the same EQ it would take me sometime to accept it again. Never really got a sound I was after if I am honest with myself. So now my only stingray is special 4 H. I may get a 5 H someday but I am done with the HH. I should really change my avatar some day.

I have full respect for those who love their HHs, but I pretty much concur with you. My 4HH is a pre-Special, so I can't judge the HH Specials, but I also never found too much to like about most of the pickup selector positions.

Full respect as well and I really wanted to like positions 2-5 because to me it would be the ultimate bass. Maybe it could have been better if the neck pickup was closer to the bridge?
