EBMM StingRay Special Club

Full respect as well and I really wanted to like positions 2-5 because to me it would be the ultimate bass. Maybe it could have been better if the neck pickup was closer to the bridge?

Well, fortunately for you a 5H is a great compliment to the 4H as it really is its own thing with the 3 way switch on the 5H. It gets you some tones that are unique to just the 5H that you can't get on the 4H.

So I just returned my Stingray Special 5 HH. The reason is because it’s a HH. This was my second HH and I felt like I forced myself to like position 2-5. I would find a EQ that I liked but the next time I plugged in using the same EQ it would take me sometime to accept it again. Never really got a sound I was after if I am honest with myself. So now my only stingray is special 4 H. I may get a 5 H someday but I am done with the HH. I should really change my avatar some day.

I went through the same thing a month or so ago.

5H is the best Stringray imho. I love the 3 way switch

Interesting, I find myself gravitating to positions 2 and 4, perhaps because I have been a J bass guy forever and I seem to be searching for my DJ5 sound. Wanting to love the standard position one sound but fighting all the time.

With my 5HH, I really find myself going with anything but 3.
1 is great to really cut through (classic sound, right?)
2 is cool because it feels kind of Jazz-like
4 has some real thickness
5 has some muddy cut and it's so fun for attempting to emulate Double-bass.

I'm a diehard HH guy. I've owned three and still have two of them, my co-number 1's, and those two basses would be the last bass gear I sell if I was ever forced into that situation.

That being said, I have no issue with anyone who decides that the H is where it's at for them. Buy what works for you and, as a luthier who used to do all the work on my basses would say when you picked up your instruments after he worked on them, "Play the $h1t out of it!".

Not too different from my assessment, though I've learned to like Position #3 (both pickups) a lot recently. I've been using it as a fuller, beefier version of Position 2 that works well well I want a tone that sits deep in the mix.

Position 5 is the one I've been using least recently, even though I was really into it for a while. I was looking at it as a P sound on steroids and, depending on my whim, that could be a good thing or not as good a thing.

But, overall, I find my tastes for the five positions is kind of fluid and that's something I've really liked about the HH. It seems that I can get kind of ... bored? ... with a certain tone and then re-dicsover another I had been ignoring for a while. But it also means that I can always find a great tone that makes me really happy with the HH options and the EQ. Although, I have always liked Position 4 and have never gotten bored with it. Since buying my first Stingray about 16 years ago, Position 4 has been and still is my runaway favorite of the five. But, don't read that as attempt to change an H fan's mind. That's just one hack's opinion! :D :bassist:

Great post. I agree and like my HHs a lot. I don’t think of them as an H with more options but just a different bass entirely. I like all the settings for different things.

All that said I still want some single H basses too. :D Really into EB basses at the moment though Ill probably be going with pre specials for any future acquisitions.

In Europe, it's extremely hard to find a StingRay Special with roasted maple fretboard nowadays, especially in Frost Green colour, but I finally got one, after searching for months. It's an absolute beast! Let me introduce my new baby!

Anyone know where I can find the dimensions of a Stingray 5?

I have a flight case that is molded for P/J basses (Gator Titan) and im planning to take the case with me to pick up a bass from a friend that lives out of states. And hopefully flying back with the Stingray inside that case.

Anyone have any experience with that case or with other P/J bass molded cases? Part im most concerned is the bottom that seems a bit wider than the Fenders.

Thanks!

Congrats! Have one of these on order and I'm very jealous of you right now :P. I like the white pearl pickguard on it, really brightens it up. Did you just swap it with your Amethyst Sparkle in the back?

Very nice! I bought a 5-string Special in that color and it definitely looks better in person. Mine came with a black pickguard, but now I'm on the fence about looking for a pick guard like the one on yours....

Is that the stock case that came with the bass? Mine came with the now-standard-issue MM-badged Mono case that is a very nice case, but unusable for me as the case has no provisions for back/shoulder straps that I find necessary for transporting the bass and (usually) a wireless rack. I bought a ProTec Contega case for the bass and sold the MM Mono case to another TB member.

Enjoy!

Greetings, didn't know there was a separate SR Special "Club" but glad I found it!
I purchased this beauty from one of Talkbass' OG members, and is my first SR5 in quite some time. Had a 2010s SR5 H that recorded great but didn't perform live like I wanted, so had a 90's Lakland 55-94 w/ Barts that I used forever, which I wish I'd never sold, and found those 'mids' we're always talking about.

I started playing again earlier this year as an old bandmate was restarting his old band, and saw MM finally updated/modernized the SR line to stuff I prefer (the old stuff is great too, obviously, just didn't fit my tastes). 18V, 22 frets, lighter weight, and HH config sold it for me.

Here's a few pics of mine, love the black hardware and ebony board. Roasted would look awesome too but I'm content for now!

I'll be chiming in but have been reading some of the HH pickup config feedback and it's interesting how we all hear and like different things, naturally.

Since I got this, I've 'wanted' to like the Position 3 mode the best, and have been EQ'ing my preamp and amp to match it, and I kind of just gave up last night, in that I strongly prefer Position 4 for fingerstyle and light OD with a pick, and then Position 2 or 1, depending, for full-on pick attack, clean or driven.
I play some stuff with pick in Position 3 but, I just feel like I get weird phasing stuff or ghost notes or drop outs in that setting for whatever reason. The others are solid and always sound great.

Pos. 5 is definitely useful, if I had music that called for it, but not with this project. Still good to know it sounds great though for a neck-only signal.

I think I like Pos. 4 so much, is because if you took the H pickup and stuck it dead center of the bass, that's pretty much the tone you'd get. I wonder if I could get MM to make me a custom job like that... lol.

With the 18V pre you can also crank the EQ without 'bad' distortion which is great to have on these, where the EQ can totally transform the sound of the instrument.

I'm still reading contrary info on pickup heights... I feel like mine is good, but I'll watch a video or read a thread that is somewhat or significantly different than the MM 'official' user guide, so maybe I just need to get a string height measurer and do some A/B'ing. I play this tuned ACGCF, so drop C just 1 step down on the B string, as going down to G isn't my thing. Feedback here would be appreciated!

Running through a Darkglass MT500 v.2 and DG410NE cab. Love how different the pickup and EQ combinations work with the IR cabinet and mic options for DI purposes.

Anyway, sorry for the dissertation but I'm on lunch break and wanted to check in and say hey as it feels good to get my chops and finger strength back up to par and getting those callouses going. ;)

Congrats love that color!

UNEXCEPTABLE!

Thank you for that, NDC.

Wow, that is brutal. Didn't see that initially. Not sure if there is enough of a neck/bodygap here to loosen and pull the neck in that direction to suffciently correct as is the usual practice in these cases.

It doesn't take much wiggling to make the strings align perfectly with the pole pieces. However, they still overlap the magnets and the OP loves it as-is. I wouldn't worry about it.

Nice bass, Egroeg!
