As a so-called “weight-weenie ”, a non-endearing label I’ve earned after 50, yes, 50 years of moving grand pianos of all sizes, semi-trailers full of arena-scale PA gear, and Fender, Music Man, Peavey T40s, and even Alembics, I can say that while in the Czech Republic last week, i managed a 13.5 bass, because i kinda had to.
I was graciously provided a bass by local production company. It was a parts bass resembling a Jazz bass. It wasn’t an instrument I’d want to play, but it was available and saved me from bringing a bass along.
But the most noticeable thing about the bass was its weight. Yikes, it’s heavy! We put it on the bathroom scales in our hotel room and it read 6.12. No way, this thing weighs more 6lbs! But wait….that was kilograms. I did the quick conversion and it was around 13 1/2 pounds!
And I played it for two rehearsals and two concerts. And it didn’t kill me after all. Shoulder was a little sore the next day, I must admit….
So while I don’t know the exact intent of the term in this conversation, you guys better be grateful that you can play a bass or move an amplifier you like with no concern for the weight. After that 50 years, I’ve made a choice before my 65-YO a$$ was forced to.
Just remember, a gram of prevention is worth a kilogram of cure….
(I’ve been asked to plan to make this trip again next year and if I do, I’ll probably take my 8.2lb Stingray Special 5H. For several reason…)
